Clutch pedal replaced but not quite right

Featured Replies

I replaced my clutch pedal today because of the widely-documented problem of failed spot welds. The old one came out in a slightly undignified fashion so I wasn't able to ascertain exactly what went where, but the guide on UK MkIVs helped ( http://uk-mkivs.net/photos/ctp/picture626214.aspx ).

Having installed the new pedal, it all seems to work but doesn't feel quite right. I know this is partly because I accidentally snapped the plastic tab that presses the microswitch, so it might settle at a slightly different level. However, it also wobbles slightly from side to side. Is this abnormal or have I just never noticed it before? The bolt is tight and the tubular metal sleeve is in place, between the bolt and the pedal box.

When I had finished reassembling things, I did find a very small ball bearing (maybe 1-2mm) in the driver's footwell, but I don't know whether this is from the clutch pedal or from the headlight switch, which I also removed along with the lower dash in order to gain better access.

Any pointers?

have you fitted the 2 little bushes that keep it centred on the metal sleeve either side

Thanks, I hadn't fitted them. In fact, I didn't even know they existed and have no idea where they must have pinged to, because I've cleaned the car out and they haven't turned up! I've been to a dealer and bought a new pair, though, and fitted them this morning. It feels much better now.

EDIT: The ball bearing was a red herring: it was from my screwdriver handle - the little ball bearing that holds the bits in place.
