Felica 1.9D Starting issue

Featured Replies

Trying to help my sister out with an issue with regards the starting of her car. When it has been stopped for 15 minutes or so, the engine will not start at all. However leave it for an hour and she will start on the first turn of the key.

We have changed the Temp Sensor which improved it very slightly. Its going into our local Skoda garage next week but my sister, being the sneaky one, wants to make sure they are trying not pull a fast one and be slightly per armed so to speak.

Was just wondering of there any other suggestions to why it might do this. The car has been utterly reliable other than this starting problem.

did you use the correct 'colour' temp sensor? they should be green on a diesel... it's more likely to be the temp sensor that's causing it than anything else.....

prepare yourself to get properly shafted by the skoda dealer, £30 for the sensor, then £50 diagnostics charge at least, then if you want them to fit it too you'll need a new mortgage to fund it

the other thing is, often when you buy aftermarket sensors form gsf or ecp or jorily, they often use sub-standard eastern european crap basically and they stop working, i bought like 4 sensors on mine till i finally bit the bullet and shelled out for a genuine skoda one

She brought 1 online which had the green band on it.

I know how it takes to fit, about 30 seconds. Will tell her what you have said.

Have you had any issues since putting in a genuine Skoda one?

since fitting a genuine thermostat and temp sensor (at the same time) it's complete cured all my problems

If you have breakdown cover with AA or RAC first thing they do is diagnostics check with a laptop, seems as you may have to pay 50 big ones for skoda to look you may as well let them do this. I have done this twice for two cars one was my wifes clio (misfire was just ht lead) and one of my old cars a matiz (sparkplug) it saved me a small fortune both being a simple fix i could do myself. If you only have the basic cover you'll have to take the vehicle a few miles from your house. Still worth it though. ;)

Any chance you can link me to these exact parts for 1.9D year 2000. Have already purchased wrong parts and would like to be sure this time, the thermostat and temp sensor. I also see that the radiator fan does not seem to be running. Will this problem be cured by replacing the parts above or will I need a radiator fan switch aswell?

Thanks

Edited by Inernest

normally i would point to a fan switch (on side of radiator) for a non-running fan, but if you have a dodgy thermostat you should change that first as it might not be coming on because the radiator is not getting warm enough to switch it

Thanks, do you know the correct parts for a 2000 1.9D Felicia?

Well I do declare a first I think.

Sister took car into our local Skoda dealer, who lent her a car for the day, to see if they could resolve the problem. Read the codes as being a Thermostat issue or could have been temp sensor (see was tired when I spoke to her) and they charged here the total of £20 as they could not identify the fault completely and fix the car.

Both of us were expecting a £50 charge just to plug in and get the codes.

So the issue is still present so what she intends to do is get a new Temp Sensor and Thermostat for the car and replace them. My question is where is the thermostat located, had a quick look last night but could not find it easily, assumed it would be at the top of the engine somewhere. Could someone tell us were it is?

thermostat is on the bottom of the water pump, there's a black plastic elbow thingy, access is from underneath

Thank you.

Got the price of the Skoda parts and will order them tomorrow for her. Job for Saturday (with a dinner made as well  ) Axle stands to raise it up so I can fit underneath.

EDIT.

Price given over the phone was for the petrol versions even though I said diesel to him :dull:

Help needed slightly.

Went to local Skoda dealer at Fareham to get quote for Thermostat and Temp Sensor for my sister car.

They had difficulty finding the part numbers (maybe its to old for thier system ;) ) any got the price for the Thermostat at just under £20 but when I got home had a message which was garbled a bit but think he said it was £35 for the temp sensor. Will be ringing in the morning to check but does that sound right to you.

Remember its for the 1.9D

Thanks.

got the price for the Thermostat at just under £20

I got a pukka Skoda 'stat, albeit for my 1.6 and it was just under 19 quid, so yours sounds about right on that score :) :)

Dealer actually had it in stock at the time too. Well worth the 10 minute walk ;)

Alex

mine thermostat thingy for my 1.6 felicia cost £3.14 off ebay and has saved me £££'s in petrol costs over the last 8000miles since i changed it. the engine was running cold permanently until i changed it... took ten mins to change

Thermostat I think is around the correct price but its the temp sensor price that is throwing me. You can get one of the net for around £10 but a genuine Skoda one is maybe £35.

Anyway will ring them just after they open to confirm the price, like I said it maybe different but the message was a bit garbled but wanted to see if that was the rightish price.

When I was looking to change my 'stat, the recommendation from TeflonTom was to 'go genuine', I would say the same be true of the sensor.

I work in computer/printer service, whenever people have complained about poor quality print on their printer, the first question is always about using genuine toner. As soon as they do that the problems vanish. The are cheap toners out there, and there's a reason they're cheap. I believe that pattern parts are good where they are 'dumb' parts (e.g. wings, bonnet) but when it comes to fault finding / rectification etc, the genuine part is the way to go. Might cost a bit more but you know it's "right".

Yes been there nd done that with my Volvo, cheap part from ebay failed within 5 days bit the bullet after that and paid for a proper part and no problems since.

Temp sensor brought via the web by sister and seemed to work for a while. Parts should be in by the weekend.

Went to local Skoda dealer at Fareham to get quote for Thermostat and Temp Sensor for my sister car.

ah yes, sparshatt's in my local franchised dealer too, they are absolutely useless at parts in there, you are far better off going to tps for genuine parts in portsmouth which is up near hilsea train station.

oh and rainbow, i dont agree about using partern parts like wings, the ones that solent car panels got me were crap and didn't fit properly

Had ordered parts before knowing about TPS :(

Parts have arrived and will proceed tonight with doing the easy option and replace the temp sensor with a genuine Skoda one. Then get sister to go for a drive and thenwhen engine warm come back home and then we will wait for 15-20 minutes and then try again to see if thats solved it.

That way I can eliminate each part and put results on here for future reference if anyone else gets the same problem.

Update.

Genuine Skoda Temp Sensor fitted Friday evening. Sent sister out for a 30 minute drive afetr fitting and then let it cool for 15 minutes when she got back. Result is still the same.

Thermostat to be fitted this weekend as sister was very ill on Saturday not easy to put a car onto ramps by yourself. If that does not solve it then will have to investigate further.

Not sure how different the diesel is to the petrol, but my thermostat is in the top of the engine, and the rad-thermostat is in the middle on the edge of the rad. Putting it on ramps would make changing either of these a lot harder. :S

On the diesel its at the base of the engine :wonder: when the more logical position I would have thought be at the top.

I will be very interested to hear how you get on with the replacement thermostat. I have exactly the same problem. Replaced the temperature sender, sensor, at the weekend but after a bit of driving difficult to start again. Although I do have a flashing heater light swell. I did change the glow plugs swell. Last thing I have left now is the thermostat.

Let's see how it goes

has she filled up with fuel since this started happening? as it sounds very much like petrol in the diesel they will start ok when cold but not when hot.. might just be worth having a sniff inside the filler neck?

either that or maybe get the pump timing checked

Its been doing it for over the last few months as her job changed so she is doing a couple of shorter journeys during the week. As the car was sat in the works car park for 6-8 hrs during the day it worked everytime.

Will keep everyone informed on how things go. Just going to get a new thermostat housing seal.
