:wonder: Called in a back street garage tonight and he had about 4 or 5 engines that had broken with a faulty oil pump chain, is it a common problem ? cheers - Stuart

This is a common problem with some 2.0 PD engines, but fortunately the BKD (and any of the other variants that found their way into the Octavia) doesn't appear to suffer from this.

As said, it appears that the BKD, being a slightly later PD140 revision, doesn't seem to suffer from this issue.

 Thats good to know mine 'should' be alright, are the issues with the pump chain ? in which case can you look out for any symptoms - cheers - Stuart

Personally I wouldn't worry, there don't seem to be any cases of this ever happening to a BKD.

Its probably a silly question but how do i know if mine is a BKD engine or not?

Chain driven oil pump issues are restricted to the 2.0lt TDi Superb with the engine mounted logitudinally AFAIK

Yep, was an issue affecting the longitudinal engines, so Superb, A4, A6 etc.

BKD identification - it'll say on your V5 for one. And it'll be identified on various stickers on the car, and should be on a sticker in the front of the service book too. On the car, check the ID sticker next to the spare wheel well, which will list car info, and factory options fitted etc.

Great, thanks. I've just had a look. It's BMN, hopefully thats ok?

Yep, sounds right. You won't have a BKD certainly, as it's a 2.0 PD170 in the vRS.

It's based on the same engine, same block I believe, but obviously with a different turbo and injectors, along with a DPF.

Looking at Etka (the VW Group parts catalogue) the AZV, BKD & BMN engines all use the same part number oil pump and drive. None of these versions seem to suffer with oil pump drive failure.

BKD 374,000kms and still going strong.

Plus the BKD engines dont have a DPF, so double bonus.

That was actually one of the main reasons I chose an Octavia, it was the last large diesel hatchback available in the UK without a DPF and without common rail.
