Vrs Rear Springs Far Too Soft

Featured Replies

Went away for a long weekend there, didn't fully load the boot and definitely no more than 200kg, yet the rear end of the car was hunkered down and it doesn't half spoil the handling, goes all squidgy.

Not keen on lowering, too worried about speed humps. Do those blocks the caravan towing fraternity use work well? What do they do to the handling?

200kg is still a fair weight to carry!

Used to find the same carrying boxes of sales catalogues in a combi. Biggest problem is the big overhang- The overhang seems to have a 'leverage' effect-I found if you piled the weight up behind the rear seats it wasn't so bad? I regularly used to hit the bump stops at the rear if I hit a sharp depression in the road. :o

It does make the front go 'light' too...

Think those blocks will make the car look daft when unladen though.

I suppose a self levelling system is the way to go-maybe on the next Octy? Or the Superb may have it?

I've measured mine with a full load (and passengers) at the rear and it appears to drop 20mm compared to where it sits when its empty. The weitecs are stiffer so the difference loaded/unloaded is not so great i think.

I have a family trip to france planned in the summer so i'll wind the rears up by that amount before we go so it'll sit level when loaded. It'll be wound back down once we're back home.

Hmmm, not a fan of self levelling suspension. Bad experience on one of my cars with that

That's interesting, so even with the stiffer lowering springs it's still dropping a significant amount. There's a caravan place near me so i'll pop in and have a word, see if they'll let me try a pair in their car park and load the rear end up.

Which would lead me to believe that the weitec springs are that much stiffer than stock (dampers however will be much more, er, damp-er?¬!_)

:p

Either that or my crap is heavier than yours..

Seeing this made me curious.... I often travel with two very large dogs in back of mine... very large... and the car is always hunkered down when they are on board, I take speed humps with great caution but the effect is so much that I do have to take the dogs out to get the car over the lip on my driveway without catching it.. have usually just put a few extra pounds in the rear tyres and accepted the effect.. I have never considered changing springs or dampers... would I approach dealer or suspension specialist of some kind ?

My money's on the caravan towing crowds having the answer to this currently. They're not just into towbars, they go for poly bushed suspension and uprated springs and shocks.

Didn't manage to get down to the caravan place today but i've seen this idea and wondering if it's the future --> http://www.springassisters.co.uk/Rubber%20Ass%20Page.htm

Now despite the text in that website URL, i promise that website is safe for work :-)

I fitted spring assisters last year , very happy with them. details in Octavia II forum , search for spring assisters.
