My Y reg octavia estate 1.9tdi (200k) makes a grinding rumble when cornering hard, not fast, but hard with the steering almost in full lock. My mechanic (a friend) has diagnosed a problem with the front diff and prescribed a gearbox change.

When he had it up on his ramp he found that the 2 front wheels were grinding in certain positions.

My questions are - has anyone else had this issue and resolved it? Do I really need to replace the whole gearbox or are there cheaper quick fix options?

Does anyone know where to get a cheap EGS gearbox?

Sounds like the CV joints maybe worn out to me.

Nope its the diff on its way out common problem with the Vag 20v turbo unit start looking for a secondhand box someone on here may have one i used the good old ebay and got one for my first VRS from an Audi A3 (i know yours is a tdi but 200k is good for a gearbox in a vag
