my window winder has jammed,though with a bit of force it will move.

Now the window has dropped 4/5 inches.You can move it up and down with your hands either side of it.

Any ideas of whats gone wrong so i know were to look when i take the door card off.

Awkward to dismantle. Removal of the door card will probably break a few clips though cheap to replace. After that the mechanism is held in by 5 or 6 rivets, or possibly screws on earlier cars. I had an occasional doorhandle problem and couldn't work out how to seperate the mechanism from the window so didn't proceed.

Window problems are fairly common on VAG cars and you could end up without the use of your car if parts are needed. May be better to send to a specialist in this case, they will be familiar with the common problems.

If it is electric it could be one of three things (from my limited experience) Motor, Cables or runners,

Motor - If you can hear it, it is usualy OK, if not you will probably need a new one

Cables - Cables can come off the bit that it winds round (stop me if I am being too technical)

Runners - The window has popped of the runners and can be put back

Take the door card off and have a look you can usually fix it yourself it the cable has not snapped

Had a look today and the cable has snapped.

Ebay sell window door mechanism repair kits for £12 or so,will probably be cheaper to have a go myself.
