drive shaft popping out of cv :(

Featured Replies

Yesterday I set about doing the wishbone bushes on the fabia.

Previously I have changed the drivers side cv joint and had a bit of trouble getting it to slide on the splines of the shaft. I eventually got it on and have done a good 3000 miles since with no trouble.

I went to swing the hub assembly out of the way to do the console bush on the drivers side and the shaft popped out of the cv again. Rather frustrated by this I reassembled it all, secured the boot and refilled with grease. Made sure it was secure, gave it a good hefty shoving in, out etc. It was not coming off. Took the car for a test drive, did a few miles, was very impressed with how much difference the bushes made (previously I've only done them on other peoples so only had their word to go on).

Pulling up a medium hill, first gear, out around a car, no more than 1 turn of the steering wheel, gassed on and she popped out again!

So I've left it down the bottom of the hill and am going to attack it today.

Does anybody have any suggestions why this would be happening? Or has it happened to you before?

I know there's a snap clip on the end of the shaft that's there to stop it sliding out of the cv, that seemed to have worked as it wouldn't pull off when I tried by hand.

Couple of things,...which CV joint are we talking about?? Is it the outer one that goes into the hub unit...or the inner one that goes into the gearbox??? Also why are you swinging the hub carrier that ammount out the way to do the console bush???? You only need to remove the front pivot bolt and the three small bolts for the lower ball joint to wishbone..then wiggle the wishbone out...well thats what worked for me (several times) B)

It's the outer cv.

had to move the hub out a touch to get the ball joint out of the wishbone.

going to start work on it shortly.

:o :o :o :o :o

WHAT THE :swear:

THE OUTER CV JOINT!!!

You have the drive shaft then the outer CV join which has the spline on it which goes through the centre of the hub/bearing unit which is what the brake disc and wheel bolt to! THE SPLINE WHEN INSERTED INTO THE HUB/BEARING UNIT PROTRUDES THROUGH IT TO THE OUTSIDE.. THEN A 12POINT LOCKING HUB NUT IS FITTED TO 50NM (37LBF FT) PLUS A 45DEG TURN!! IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE THIS FITTED!!! :o :o :o

HANG ON A MO''''

IS IT THE DRIVESHAFT COMMING OUT OF IT'S SIDE OF THE OUTER CV JOINT??? IF SO THEN GET A NEW CIRCLIP AS THATS WHAT HOLDS IT IN.... ALSO BEFORE FITTING THE BOOT GAITER CLAMPS DID YOU FIT A FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER UNDER THE DRIVESHAFT TO BOOT LIP TO LET THE AIR PRESSURE OUT?? AS THIS COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS...EITHER THAT OUR YOUR SUSPENSION IS DODGY WITH SOMETHING APPLING TO MUCH FORCE TO THE JOIN..GET IT SORTED QUICK AS COULD CAUSE MAJOR ACCIDENT!!!

Sorry about the CAPS LOCK.... the other thing it could be......has the front pivot bolt for the wishbone come out?? just a thought...as then the hub carrier would move further away from the driveshaft allowing the driveshaft to come out???? B)

yes, thats it, the shaft is coming out of it's side of the cv joint.

I'm hoping it'll just be a new clip but not 100% sure as it had already popped out once earlier while i had it on stands. Not sure if it's something more expensive....
