The "long" vRS gearboxes

Featured Replies

Anyone still got / remember having one of the longer gearbox'd fabia vRS'?? Just wondering how they were etc etc. Probably getting one to replace the one I have now, which is likely to need a rebuild soon, swapping diff over etc etc. Just wondering - I believe the longer aspect comes from having a longer final drive, which affects gears 4 5 & 6. If so, how goes the jump from a "normal" 3rd gear say at the redline 80mph, into the longer 4th gear, feel? Is the gap good?

I am looking forward to hopefully getting better motorway fuel economy as 70mph will be about 1800rpm as opposed to 2100rpm. :)

Pretty sure I have one of those if 70 is 1800rpm. I'll have to check and see :)

Jas, still got mine. 70mph is around 1900rpm. If I remember right a 4k change from 3rd to 4th will take you to about 2.8k rpm.

The final drive is different as is some of the gears. Think 5th in the long is similar to 6th short. 4th is like 5th. 3 and 2 are more in between.

My last Fabia had the longer gears, the only difference i ever noticed was 70-80mph rev range, and i cant say i noticed any difference in economy either.

However now with the hybrid, and the bulk of the power not coming in till higher up, i'm glad i have the slightly shorter box, but then it depends why you want the longer gearing ?

Hang on a minute.. if The longer gears were, well.. longer.. how come the top speed didn't really change on the stock car?

Lack of extra puff maybe ?

Mine has a the longer box.

TBH I've never driven one with a shorter box so I can't comment. You're welcome to "give mine a go" next time you're in the area.

Correct, and did you know that top speed was actually in 5th on the longer box, not 6th. Technically not enough 'puff' in 6th to go any quicker than if you were at the top of 5th!

The longer box is better for 1/4 days for sure, I have to change to 5th to cross the line at 100mph give or take, whilst the longer box will go to 110mph with ease ive been told.

Yeah, being able to touch 110mph in 4th will be handy, as I need to change to 5th at the moment, so close to the finish line as well.... I simply can't do more than 100mph in 4th right now...

I know the feeling fella, down at pod etc I have to decide on each run to keep it in 4th and just go out of the main power band and waste the time, or change gear to get back into the power in 5th, but then waste time doing that! Ggggrrr

Group buy on sport boxes? :D

I can touch 80mph at the redline in 3rd and 110mph in 4th is achievable with a longer box. I was changing up to 5th along Folly/Avon Rise at +/- 115mph @ Combe

Mine has one of the longer boxes.

The gearbox codes:-

FJW - 06/03-06/03 - long gears +ASZ

FSM - 06703-01/04 - long gears +ASZ

HDS - 01/04-04/06 -BLT

JNC - 04/06-04/07 -BLT

Hope that helps!
