which lowering springs for mk1 vrs?

Featured Replies

I have just discovered that one of my front springs has snapped. It is still drivable, and has probably been snapped for a while, as the handling is no different. Therefore, a new spring is required, or possibly a set of lowering springs. The question is which though? I am not in the market for coilovers - too much £££ right now, and dont want it too low, so which to go for??

Any recommendations please?

really you should do springs at the minimum in pairs, or as i prefer a set. Your should also change asap, the issue is under extreme braking, you dont know how the car will react.

oe will match your shocks, if you uprate with something like H&R or weitecs and lower, you will just run the risk of your own shocks going shortly after as they will not be matched to the springs or up to the job. Also the ride wont be as good as it could.

I am tempted to get a set of lowering springs. Part of me says buy them, then upgrade the shocks when i need them. However, I have no idea what to go for - in the past I have had Eibach or FK suspension, but options seem alot more limited with the VRS. If anyone has any personal recommendations, I would appreciate it.

I have played with numerous setups on the vrs, and on golfs in general.

eibach dont work with the vrs

the vrs is a fickle car for suspension, you have limited choice sadly.

as i said before either H&R or weitec springs are the best/main choice

or coilovers, but you already said you dont want to spend that much.

Why change the springs only, to then have to do all again in X amount of miles when the shocks go. If the shocks are over 50k they are probably past their best anyway and the new springs will only speed their demise and give your cr*p handling as they are not matched properly.

Just a thought...another member has some weitec for sale for £275, if i were you i would buy them, as they are a good setup much better than budget coilovers like the ebay jobbies, the seller bigbossman is a good guy too so they wont be screwed.

Got to agree the H&R springs are the best option for the VRS.

Gone for a pair of OEM spec springs in the end - couldn't get H&R springs quickly enough as this is my daily drive and I need to commute. Two springs for £66 and will be here tomorrow, just got to get them fitted now. Toyed with Weitecs, but can't justify that expense right now as tax is due and i need to cambelt the mrs' car. As an offside - priced up new Bosch rear discs and pads - £40 all in, so shall be ordering them on payday. Can't believe how cheap they are.
