Adjusting the handbrake

Featured Replies

I have an 04 plate vrs and the handbrake holds way too high on the lever and want to adjust it really. Is it under the centre console on the handbrake assembly or underneath the car? Thanks olly

Piece of cake.

Just click of the ashtray thing at the rear of the center console (just past the drinks cup holder hole) & you can see the adjusting screw in there. You will need a 10mm spanner to adjust it.

Great stuff thanks for that. Thought it would be simple but didn't want to strip it all! Lol

Careful not to place too much tension on cable and apply excess pressure on discs with pads.

There should be no space between rest bar and brake cable end, found at rear of rear brake back-plate.

This is a guide that rear pads do not have too much excess pressure on brake discs, with an over-tightened cable.

This applies to both rear wheels.

If you could raise both rear wheels while your are adjusting brake cable and test for this, would be ideal, but not totally necessary.

Adjustment nut as said is a 10mm nut which has flats on base, this is to stop cable nut unwinding itself.

Cable nut gets tight until flat area relocates itself and cable will slacken a bit.

Ensure nut flat is sitting/located correctly when finished turning nut.

Get some handbrake return springs on the handbrake lever first, then adjust the adjusting nut. Have a look at the sticky thread up the top of this forum.
