Rear Speakers

Featured Replies

It's time to upgrade my rear speakers in my Octy vRS me thinks.

I'm looking at getting some 6x9's stuffed on the rear parcel shelf so I was wondering if there is any advice you guys have.

The speakers will be driven by a Sony CDX-F7500 and I really only have a few questions.

What 6x9's should I be looking for? (Price is not too much of an object)

Will the parcel shelf rattle like mad if the volume is cranked too much? (This would drive me insane)

Should the rear passenger door tweeters be disconnected?

I am taking this job myself and have not done any of the wiring with the speakers before so any advice for the above, or general pointers would be much appreciated.

Cheers Guys......

Can't really advise on which speakers to buy...comes down a lot to your personal preference - try going to an ICE specialist and listening to some and decide which ones you like.

The parcel shelf is pretty sturdy, and shouldn't vibrate that much. If you find it does though, it's pretty easy to brace it. Should warn you that there is actually metal in there, so cutting it can be...interesting... ;)

And yes, disconnect the rear tweeters, they will distort much easier than an aftermarket speaker, which will drive you nuts. :D

The speaker wiring is pretty easy - do some searches on here should tell you what you need to know, and if it doesn't then just ask... :)

better off making a stealth shelf from thin mdf or ply and mounting that to the underside of the parcel shelf. this way you wont cut or damage the parcel shelf and you'll have a solid shelf to mount the 6x9's to.

tbh if you've got a decent set of components at the front and something in the rear panels for fill then a sub and amp combo in the boot 6x9's are a bit of a waste of time.

Parcel shelf is fine I've found......has a metal plate running through it.

I have some Infinity 3-way 6x9 installed.....just cut off the connectors to the original speakers and used bullet connectors to the new ones.

Sits quite nicely in the shelf "dip".

Sounds fine to me...biased to the front.

I'm running MB quart DKC169's in the back of my Fabia:

So far they are the best sounding 6x9's I've heard to run from headunit power.

The furby shelf is pretty solid, but has an egg-box pattern underneath so you can't screw the speakers directly to the bottom to keep it subtle, so what I did is as follows:

1. Cut out two square sections of MDF slightly bigger than the speakers, having already cut holes in the wood the size of the speaker cone.

2. Cut two holes in the shelf, same size as the speaker cone.

3. Cut some wire mesh squares slightly bigger than the holes in the shelf.

4. Screw the wire mesh down with lots of small self tapping screws

5. Cover the shelf with acoustic carpet - spray the top of the shelf with spray glue, and the carpet, then stretch it to the contours of the shelf and press it down.

6. Cut the holes in the cloth for the supports strings and legs that clamp the shelf in either side.

7. Screw the speakers to the MDF, and the MDF to the shelf.

Job done, you now have a shelf that looks totally standard, won't damage your speakers if you or anybody else chuck anything on it, and doesn't even weigh half as much as if you made a full size MDF stealth shelf

I also secured the wires to mine with plastic P-clips and painted the MDF black before fitting, so it looks surprisingly tidy for a blue-peter job!

PS for those that don't like the idea of cutting your shelf up - don't! I got a second shelf from eBay for

I've got a question from my mate who wants to fit 6x9's to the parcel shelf of his car ('97 Seat Ibiza :yeahdude: )...what thickness MDF to use for a 'stealth shelf'?

Doesn't want to go to the breakers for a standard parcel shelf to cut up as it's very thin and plasticky and rattles enough without speakers!

18mm - weighs a tonne!

Thanks - 18mm it is
