I dropped the back seats of my estate this week for a tip run.

Under the rear seats, there a large round plastic thing. What is it??

It's the access to the fuel tank.

I doubt you would but a mechanic might if you have a problem with the level sensor or something. Easy access, if it wasn't there they would have to drain and drop the fuel tank out every time they wanted to do something to/with it.
