Coolant running out

Featured Replies

in the last couple of months the coolant is draning out it seems, ive thought that its normal the first time it happened since i didnt add or check it for a year, but after a month later the coolant indecator lit up again and i had to add more.

ive looked around and i cant see any leakage points, the climate i live in is hot, but its winter now so it doesnt get cooler than this, i wouldnt doubt this happening in the summer but in winter its really strange, (avg air temp is around 12c, the max in the last 2 months was 25c)

any ideas guys as to why this could be happening, how can i trace it!?

Hi!

Is it actually leaking out (the level going down) or is it the sensor? I know it is on a Fabia, but I had it on my Octavia a couple of times, (as have several others). Turns out it was a faulty sensor, not a coolant leak.

its not only the sensor, it actually runs out, i had to put around a liter and a half of Anti-Freeze/Coolant since this first happened.

oh and thanx for the fast reply.

It's leaking. Take it to your dealer. There is a crack or hole somewhere visually inaccessible to you. I had that problem with my mv6 omega before i bought the fabia.

Is the car using any oil or is the oil level staying the same? Is there any major sign of a white deposit under the oil filler car and inside the top of the cylinder head when you look through the filler hole? Does the oil on the dipstick look normal or does it have a greyish look? And can you see any very small bubbles in the coolant in the coolant bottle when the engine is running? I have seen all of these in the recent past on my Peugeot 505 and a neighbour's Rover (twice). In both cases it was cylinder head gasket problems, but those symptoms could also point to coolant leaking due to other causes - including a distorted cylinder head or an internal crack in the engine block. But these are all worst cases. Do you always park your car on a clean surface so that you would be able to see signs of a coolant leak?

@Fabia 2.0RS: i dont want to take it to the dealer as it would cost me loads of money just for the inspection, money which i dont have currently.

@DGW: none of the things you suggested apply to my condition.

any other ideas that i can check for myself?!

Is there a musty or unusual smell in the car and/or damp carpets, which might indicate that coolant is leaking from the heater matrix or connecting pipes? (I had this with a Metro). Can you get hold of a radiator pressure tester so that you can pressurise the cooling system and see if this shows up any leaks?

eeehhhmmm, i dont think i can get hold of a radiator pressure thing, as a matter of fact i would be surprised if such a thing exists in my country, but ill keep my eyes/noes open for unusual smells and damping in the carpets... thanks for the tips

Check the pipes near the exhaust system, you may have a small leak that is dripping onto the exhaust which will not reach the ground. Do you get a damp smell coming from the engine after a drive?

no, no damp smell after i drive, you see the amount of water that leaks is very little thats why im having trouble detecting it

2 possibilities for you.....this was my situation of which I had just encountered personally....

1 ) Leaking expansion tank

2 ) Faulty or cracked Thermostat housing.

Faulty Thermostat housing leaks water gradually and if this occurs, you'll find water under the cars' firewall ......where the engine bay meets front of car about where the dashboard is. Look our for these signs....

hope that helps.. :D

What engine is it? Or did I miss that?

Fan switches quite often leak on the Fabia (its ont he right hand side of the radiator as you look into the engine bay)

If its a 1.4 MPi it could be a head gasket.

thanx for all the info guys, im gonna look into it :)

and yes its a 1.4 MPi

Head gasket then I would have thought im afraid.

ill keep an eye open to all of the suggested issues/solutions and ill get back to you as soon as i manage to fix this thing... thanx alot for all the info guys

Hi Stealthmaker

Just wondered how you got on with coolant problem, mine coolant started to go down quickly - only topped it up 3 weeks ago and had to top up again today sensor came on.

Is it due to cold wealther maybe? Ive recently had temperature sensor replaced which then told me the temperature housing was faulty and that was replaced a week later, anyway hope you see this message so you can let me know how you got on.
