Just a quick question, did you receive a Navigation DVD and the 4 digit code with your new vehicle?

Navigation DVD yes - latest version 7.

You need that so you can get cheap upgrades in the future.

When V8 comes out for example it costs around £300 to buy the maps.

But "trade-in" your old V7 maps and the cost should be around £100.

Didn't get any form of code for my fitted Columbus.

Having not received either, I feel the code would be needed if the battery for any reason was disconnected and as you state the DVD for a cheaper route (no pun intended) for any map upgrade. Dealer enquiry looms.

Although not a Columbus, the Bolero in ours had no code either.

The dealer told me this is because the security features mean the unit knows if it's in the correct vehicle or not, so a code is not supplied.

You only need it if you rip it out and sell it to someone... apparently.

(which I did, to fit a Colubus)

Also with regard to maps, if you get to know your dealer they will upgrade your maps for free.

They don't need to give/sell you a disc as the info is stored on the hard drive. They just need to use one to upgrade and then take it out again.

Cheers, that most probably explains the reason for the absence of both items.

I think you should have a disc though.

Even though a good relationship with the dealer will mean you don't need it.

The code is stored in the instrument cluster.

You may retrieve it via the Dealer network if needed (for example if you sell or transpalnt the unit).

You should of had a disc (unless you are in Ireland - then you need to purchase it as it is not part of the OE spec)

The radio code has not been given out for a number of years now, it shouldn't be needed as the car remembers the code (most of the time), however if it doesn't then it's a trip to dealer to be plugged into their machine which then contacts the factory directly.

If say Bolero is removed to upgrade to Columbus then a code is required if you want to sell the bolero.Dealer uses vin number of the original vehicle and some numbers off the bolero and this will generate the code number.

I didn't get a disk, but since a kind soul provided me with an upgrade to the V7 maps shortly after I got the car, it wasn't an issue. I can't see why you would want a disk - if there's a problem the dealer can re-load it after all. I don't have a disk for the engine mapping!

The last experience I had of a built in Sat Nav was a few years back on a Honda Civic. That system had two disc slots, one for normal CDs etc and the other, a dedicated slot, for the mapping disk which needed to be loaded for navigation use. It appears that the only potential need for the Columbus disc is for a cheaper upgrade using it as part exchange. However, if the dealer provides a free upgrade on any future versions, then the need of a disc appears to be unnecessary. Mine has the 7 digit postcode facility, so I assume it's the latest version.
