What Oil?!

Featured Replies

My oil light came on, on my 57 plate 1.9TDI Elegance. Once looking in the service book to find out which oil i need, it all depends on what service plan i am on and whether my car has some kind of filter on or not. Does anyone know which oil i need? As far am im aware i need a service ever 20k miles!

VW507.00 is the spec you need to look for.

Plus how much do i need? 4 litres cost a fortune! would 1 litre fill it from the fill mark to the top?

Your oil is indeed a 5W/30. But it is also Volkswagen 507.000 certified and that is the important bit to know.

See here for recommendations from a site sponsor opie Oils

As far as I recall the 507.000 suits diesel engines, those with particulate filters and also those on extended intervals.

Be very careful buying any oil on the basis of brand or weight alone. Just because it says 5w-30 and Castrol Edge doesn't mean it is the 5w-30 Castrol Edge with the VAG 507 certification! You need to read the fine print.

According to your Skoda Owners manual you can top up with any old oil in an emergency, but if you dilute the oil in the engine too much then you will lose the Lon Life-ness and need to service it!

HTH

Edit : Just saw your last post - the total capacity of your engine is just over 4 litres so 1 litre will top up just fine. DO NOT OVERFILL or it will blow into the exhaust and kill the catalytic converter.

Nice one, So soes the 1.9tdi have a particulate filter?

Also when i went into skoda before, as i was just near one when the light came on, The service was closed so i spoke to the sales man. And he said that although i think my service is every 20k it could be "set up wrong" and be set as a different service plan. Does it matter what service your on? surely you can only use one kind of oil in an engine!?

No you don't have one (that's a good thing by the way). 507. oil is what you want. It suits ALL diesel engines.

(Since you don't have a DPF in the exhaust system you could use 506.000 oil BUT only if you are NOT on extended servicing!)

Just buy the 507.

Your car will have left the Skoda works set up with log-life (507) oil. The dealer who sold it might have reset the computer to fixed servicing at 10k miles. They do that.

If you have the car from new and you think it is extended (variable) servicing up to 20K then most likely it is.

On your next service ask for the car to continue to have long life oil and variable setting on the engine management computer and the job's done.

No i bought it second hand from skoda, and the dealer said the service was ever 20k.

Im taking into a dealer near me on manday when the service is open to find out what its set to. im guessing it is set to 20k as the sevice light didnt come on at 30k on the clock.

Will go buy some 507 tomorrow and put a little in just to get me to monday afternoon and hofully they will fill it up! :D

You can check the time and distance to next service yourself. It's in the manual: IIRC you switch on the ignition whilst holding the trip button down for two seconds. Anyway, read the manual for exact details. If the time to next service exceeds 365 days then it would save a trip to the dealer?
