Problem with Battery light

Featured Replies

Hello, I just joined the forum today, and this is my first posting.

I have an R reg Scoda Felicia 1.3 Lxi estate, and have just run out of ideas on how to fix a suspected alternator belt problem.

A new alternator was fitted about 6 months ago, and all was fine, until last week, when I noticed the battery dashboard light appearing, particulary when picking up the revs. I suspected that the alternator belt was slipping but didn't do anything about it. Sure enough, the belt broke a few days after first noticing the light.

I've now fitted a new belt, but the light still appeared after a while. Yesterday I took the car to the local auto electircal garage, and they tightened the belt for me. The car was fine this morning, up until about 30 miles, when the light started appearing as before. At this point I don't know what to do, I can't see how the belt could be tightened any more than it is already, without damaging bearings etc. Strangely, I can't hear any squealing from the belt, even when the light appears, but I guess it must be slipping? The belt itself has 4 'v' shaped grooves, and goes over pulleys on the crankshaft, water pump and alternator. There is no pulley tensioning device, and the belt is tensioned by pivoting the alternator around it's mounting bolt, and locking it into position.

Has anyone elsed experienced this kind of problem, and any ideas on how to fix it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Rob

Welcome to Briskoda, not sure on your query but sure someone will be able to help.

Welcome to Briskoda.

The belt might not be slipping. Check the connections from the alternator and check the battery terninals are OK. Run the engine and check the charging rate across the battery terminals with a multi meter, you should have a reading of just over 14 volts.

Hi and welcome aboard.
