Volvo S40 D5 R-Design

Featured Replies

Evening all, went out to Motorpoint in Glasgow with a m8 today for a look around. Came across the above car, a Volvo S40 D5 R-Design,57 plate,2.4 Turbo Diesel,Geartronic,23000 miles for a very reasonable price.

Does anyone have any experience with these cars, known problems, running costs etc etc.

Thanks in advance

BTW its not for me,i still love wee furby to bits ;)

My folks have the same model and year car. Bloody quick car too! Theyve had it since new and never had a problem with it so far. It is regularly serviced by Volvo though and has done around 45000 miles i believe.

Cheers mattie,he's got a test drive tomorrow. Have to admit it looks fantastic and its got all the toys in it.

Ive driven the s40 of my folks a few times and i love it. Really spacious and luxurious but doesnt look big from the outside. Theyll like the car im sure and the D5 engine is very good indeed.

i work for volvo and for the volume of D5 engines out there we have very little trouble with them, they are a little noisy in the smaller platform cars ie s40, but they sound awesome on full chant for a diesel engine,

As long as they are looked after they are good for 300k, if its a auto just get the box oil changed every 3 years, not part of service but advisable, only problems we tend to get are swirl arms on inlet breaking and odd egr valve or throttle housing failing but even that don't happen often,

My parents have a V50 D5 R-design and my dad loves it,

Oh if you get bored of power volvo do a polestar chip to take it to 200bhp

Hi volvomeg, yeah its the 6 speed geartronic auto box. Do you have any idea what the servicing costs are like for it? Only has 23000 on the clock but would be handy to know if theres a big service item coming up.

Cheers

Apart from there belts they dont really have any big service items unlike there 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines that need there fuel additive topping up every 36k and soot filters replacing every 72k

I've read that the timing belts/tensioners can let go early (I've looked into S60 D5s previously) so are worth changing at 4yr. Supposedly it's an easier job on the D5 than many engines.

Yeah they have always had a problem but it tends to be on bigger cars as the d5 engine in the s40/v50 runs a different belt setup and not had one of them fail yet

I borrowed a petrol S60 auto for the weekend whilst my son was using my AWX Superb.

Sorry chaps, the Volvo was an enormous let down. I'll ignore the fuel consumption (just unbelievable) as Volvo make a good diesel.

The turning circle is somebody's idea of a joke. They put a 5 cyl engine in sideways and then forget the front wheels have to swivel. I just could not live with tanker style manoeuvrability - reversing with a trailer would be sheer hell.

There's no room in the damned thing - no rear legroom and the front passenger is pushed over towards the door by this huge console - what's in there? The car is a reverse Tardis. The boot is even worse than the Superb's.

At 70 mph on a motorway the petrol auto is noticeably noisier than my diesel Superb. It rides over concrete sections like a plank too.

Volvo seats - hmm. Nice in theory, but the leather is so slippery that you slump down into an uncomfortable position and get lower back pain. The cloth seats in my poverty spec. Superb are actually much more comfortable for me - and I don't rate them particularly highly.

Despite being a "2.4T" whatever that is, it's noticeably slower than my AWX Superb - I suspect the slushbox kills it. It does handle a bit better than the Superb though - but nowhere near BMW standards.

Anyone following the Superb Mk 1 section may notice I'm not always very nice about it - after a weekend with the Volvo I may love it a bit more. The S60 was a very big disappointment.

rotodiesel.

OP looked at a diesel S40, not a petrol S60!

D5 is a cracking engine, drove a manual S60 with it and it was stellar. Well I thought so anyway. I imagine it'd be a bit quicker still in the smaller platform cars. Even on the S40/V50/C30 cars though, the turning circle is not great, so make sure the guy knows this.
