bam engines

Featured Replies

What is the maid differences between the bam unit and the auq apart from.the power I see the manifolds are differend to

Does the manifold fit on other engine or does the bam engine fit in the octavia

BAM engine will fit an Octavia, though tbh, after all the cost etc, i wouldnt see the point.

turbo, injectors, maf, manifolds.

apparently the rods are stronger, but they're still not the best.

internals in engine (forged), turbo, manifold, intake, intercooler setup, exhaust and DP/cat etc

doesn all fit, just need to swap bits

The BAM, and other 225 engines (there is an earlier 225 engine iirc) have stronger internals basically

iirc the standard 1.8 20v engines are capable of withstanding 300bhp, whereas the 225 1.8 20v's are capable of withstanding 350bhp

The 225 engines do basically fit, but there's alot of pipework to swap/adapt too.

Mapped, the 225 engines seem comparable at stage 1 to a stage 2 'normal' 20v (roughly-ish).

Last time I looked at this option (which was about 2years ago), it would have been cheaper/similar cost to uprate my normal 1.8 20v to beyond BAM spec, as opposed to fitting a stock BAM. 2 years ago BAMs where going for big $ for an engine without history, might be cheaper now ?

tbh, would only be worth it if considering a hybrid KOx / IHI VF34 / GT2860RS, but keeping a 'stock' engine strong enough to last ~ if you can get the engine cheap.

Thanks guys

Some AUQ's / AWT's seem to be going strong with over 300bhp.

Are you sure its BHP and not the torque that kills the rods?

I tend to agree with you on this.

Although a stage 1 Mapped 225 engine is probably around 240/250 whereas a mapped 180 engine even in stage 2 form is around 225/230. The BAM engine has a good 45 bhp on top to start with, which is pretty hard to get to with just map changes on the 180 engine.

I think if i am going to chase more power it is going to be a hybrid K03s as i can't be bothered changing all the other parts for a KO4, plus then there is handling possibly a LSD etc to get the best from the VRS chassis with more power.

It cost considerable money these days whatever route you take.

dont bother with more power, just get the car handling right and get the power to around the 220 mark with good torque and thats all thats needed, then just learn how to drive it lol(I need teaching)

LSD is the way to go. but if your thinking of going BAM then i think it would be cheaper to buy a LCR and swap parts over? then brake the LCR and sell off all the bits. then youll have the 6 speed box too. just get that LSD'd lol

the ko4 has a deeper sound to it too, Id love to do that conversion one day, but Id buy an LCR and swap everything over then flog the rest.

dont like the looks of the LCR comparedto the vRS.

yep, that's correct

In this particular case though, you can basically substitute the bhp value for newton meters

i.e. 'standard' 20v's about 300nmT, 225's 350nmT - very roughly

iirc the same goes for the gearboxes normally found attached to these engines. Which is worth considering too ( O2J 300nmT, O2M 350nmT (petrol anyway) ).

tbh, when you consider the cost, it'd be cheaper to buy a S3 and tune that to stage 2

You get all the best components ever fitted to the mk.4 platform ( engine, haldex, wishbones, braces, seats, etc, etc ~ ok, minus the LCR brembos' )

Didn't TrevorB33 do this in a Blue Octy, seem to remember reading someone on here did it.

Talking of Bam engines, some might find this interesting.

Mmm yea I think the first few cars for tests n demos had more in them
