removing rear shocks and springs

Featured Replies

Are these as easy to do as the front? Can find a guide on how to do the fronts but not the rears. Any one got any info?

Rears much easier mate. Jack up and remove wheels then remove both inner arch liners. The struts have 2 bolts up inside the arch then a bolt through the rear beam. If youre doing both at the same time youll need a jack under the rear beam to stop it falling down and bending brake pipes etc. With the jack it lets you lower the rear beam to what you want to drop the springs out. If you do a side at a time then itll be harder to remove the spring i believe.

Pretty much as other member has stated.

Doing one side at time would be my approach (having never done the job).emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Supporting trailing arm from beneath with a trolley jack, removing shock absorber lower securing bolt and slowly lowering trailing arm and then remove spring.

Remove upper shock absorber securing bolts to remove shock absorber.

Look at bump stops and replace if in doubt of condition.

Don't worry about bending brake pipes though, you can't as there is a flexible hose in-between the pipe on the car and pipe on the rear arm.

Cheers for that fabdavrav some helpfull info there

Don't lift the whole weight of the car by the rear beam , you'll bend it. Lift both sides of the car on to axle stands supporting the jacking points (Shape some stout wooden blocks to fit into the lip). Then use the trolley jack to support the rear beam when you undo the shock absorbers, just lower the rear beam enough until you can withdraw the springs.

Also replace the cheap rubber mounts at the top of the spring, stainless shims on the bottom of the spring, and fit new bump stops on the damper........just get OEM from Skoda! I've done all the suspension on mine...even had the whole rear beam axle off and re-painted...rear was easier than the front and needed less specialist tools....you don't even need spring compressors!!! B)

if u have lowering springs id recommened getting the ibiza cupra bump stops for the rear.
