Steering wheel buttons not working - now fixed!

Featured Replies

Update from a problem mentioned on an earlier thread - I'd had a weird electrical gremlin in the system.

Symptoms were: *all* the dashboard warning lights lit up while driving (but engine was fine). Switched off, then on again and all was well, but the steering wheel buttons were not working. The volume control, MFD button, phone button and cruise control (and horn) were all inoperative. Indicators, wipers and headlamp main beam all still worked fine though.

Took it up to Capitol Skoda in Newport, and they diagnosed a problem with the control module in the steering wheel. Apparently (so I was told) there is a technical bulletin from Skoda advising dealers to apply a software update that will prevent the control module from failing. Unfortunately this update only works if you apply it *before* the module fails :-) So it took the techs 2 days in total to fix it, since they needed to do some complicated electro-trickery to reset the module and get it communicating so they could apply the fix. I didn't speak directly to the tech - just the guy on the service desk - so the details could be a little scrambled, but I am under the impression that they didn't need to physically replace the control module, just reset it somehow.

Anyway, all working fine again now, and Capitol had even washed my car for me when I got it back!

I'm glad capitol skoda in newport were good to you.. they tried to rip me off BIG style when I was buying a car from them... walked out and went to White Dove in Cardiff who were about 10,00000000000x better!

Having used several Skoda dealers over the years, I've found that the sales and servicing departments can be like two different worlds - you can get excellent service from one, and be **** on by the other... I bought my Yeti through drivethedeal, so can't say what the sales side of Capitol is like, but I've had lots of dealings with the service dept and they've always seemed reasonable.
