What's the Groan?

Featured Replies

Wonder if anyone got any thoughts on this one? I haven't a clue!

1.8Tsi Octy, just on a year old, low mileage. Sometimes, under hard acceleration through the gears, around 60mph ish, strange noise, quite audible, lasts only for a couple of seconds and sounds for all the world just like someone dragging a table across a hard floor.

Trouble is, living on the Isle of Wight, there aren't that many places or opportunities to replicate the noise and it doesn't always do it. As the noise is of short duration and the car seems to almost accelerate through it, I'm almost wondering if it's something to do with aerodynamics underneath.

It's gone in for an oil change today to the local dealer,(I can't live with the idea of running on the same oil for over a year even fully synthetic.) I mentioned the noise to the mechanic but no one has mentioned this one before. No doubt if it is something as simple as the undertray, that'll get spotted.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

The wife?

The fact that it is depressed living somewhere you can only drive at less than 60?

An Albanian stowaway in the boot?

Or a resonating heat shield on the exhaust or loose wheel arch liners or loose engine undertray? Should be fairly easy to check if you can get up on a hoist. I've seen VW group cars dragging the undertray.

Hi gregoir - thanks for the suggestion - a resonating heat shield would exactly fit the circumstances. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks. I'll run it up my ramps in the next couple of days and have a poke about.

I have the same noise I think. I was told it might be the heat shield so if you find the problem let me know, please.

Hi Daz - when I eventually get to looking underneath, probably next week at this rate - if I find anything conclusive, I'll post it.

I think I have heard that from many turbo VW engines. I always suspected it to be air resonance from the turbo system.
