Hydraulic Tappet Failure Octavia 1.9 tdi (AGR)

Featured Replies

Has anybody else experienced a hydraulic tappet failure?

The piston on which the camshaft drives the valve seems to have broken up...

I believe it is an exhaust valve which has been affected.

The camshaft is damaged and there is some head damage around and near the bore of the broken up piston.

Do you think that the heasd gasket may have been blown? ( as the exhaust valve had not always opened)..

Welcome to Briskoda. You seem to have had some bad luck with your engine. The AGR is a 90bhp non-PD diesel, I believe.

Thanks for the welcome

You are certainly correct. It is 90 bhp.. I notice you have a 230 bhp model... I know mine is only 90 bhp but when you are paying the bills, a normal mpg of 70 and over, with an all time best of 83, over a 23 mile journey, is easier on the pocket.. (that is if you do not break down like me).

[Further to my first posting... Having now got the camshaft out of the way I find 3 other lifters showing signs of distress. They all have spider cracking and the area where the cam contacts is lifted slightly.... To date I have not found anybody who has come across this before.. Skoda were not interested and just kept refering me back to the dealers... I work in the aircraft industry which would always be interested in the cause of engine damage.

Can anyone direct me to someone who would know?
