Curious

Featured Replies

This may be a silly question but I'm very curious in more ways than one (I'm told!) Just wanted to know what that whirring noise is when I open the driver's door after unlocking. It is only noticeable in the quiet of the garage but obviously happens all the time.I'm sure one of you guys (or gals of course) can enlighten me  I assume it is something to do with the locking system?

Fuel pump priming?

Hard drive on Columbus starting up ;)

ie, beginning to boot up the Navigation system etc etc, so takes less time once you turn the key

If you can hear that from outside when opening the drivers door; get it backed up and checked by the dealer quickly! :p ;)

The only whirring I hear is if the other key had been used and the moment I open the door the mirrors start to move to my memory setting. You can't hear the seat move as you get in but you can certainly see it happen.

The OP's post say's nothing about being Outside the car... he said:

This say's to me that the drivers door is open.

I for one, can sure as hell hear my hard drive starting up, with the door open, just after unlocking and when the cars in the garage...! - You could hear the same when turning on ignition in my last car, with a Pioneer HD3 fitted.

Just to clarify if I may, I don't have any of the electric gizmos like satnav or seat adjustment although have the standard eletric mirror adjustment. The radio is the bolero unit, (which I think is a great unit particularly with the sd card by the way). The whirring noise lasts for about 2-3 seconds and can't think why anyone else doesn't hear it in theirs! It happens as I open the door after unlocking and can only be heard in the confines of the garage. I'm sure it's nothing to be concerned about and put it down to the lock motors. P.s. I see there are a few in the LandRover forum scoffing at our baby  I have driven a lot of LRs in my time and although they are very capable I always found them to be bloody uncomfortable, cramped with a terrible driving position, oh well, whatever floats your boat I suppose ;)

That was EXACTLY what I said about the horrid Yeti advertisement (what the people on the LR forum said). It gives the impression the Yeti can ONLY go Off road whilst driving in town. Awful, awful, awful ad that... See this thread: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/196546-yeti-tv-ad/ (And thanks Llanigraham for standing up for the Yeti in that forum!)

As to your noise: take it to a dealer.

Sorry i read Elegance, and assumed Sat Nav....

.... erm, no idea then!

No, I think I know the noises you mean. I've experienced them not just in Betty, but in a Passat and an Audi A4. Not always just after opening the door. If you stop the car and turn off, and just sit in a quiet place like a garage, there are a number of different, very soft, whirrs, buzzes and clicks to be heard. I think it is just various electronic gizmos starting up, closing down etc and nowt to worry about.

I hear it every time I get in the car when in the garage (ie. quiet).

Mine's an SE with no extra electric gizmos. Always assumed it to be the fuel pump. I had it on a previous Hyundai i10 and recall it was confirmed to be the aforesaid then.

TBH the car does all sorts of things that no other car ever did......all manner of electronics that my Anglia never had!

Isn't anyone going to support me??

(Yes, I'm Llanigraham nearly everywhere!!)

I just did Graham. I'll go hide somewhere waiting for their general wrath!

Yup, thats what it is - it was the same on my last two Octavias and the dealer confirmed this to be the case. As some have realised, its far more noticeable in a confined, closed in space such as the garage. :)

Thankyou all, Thinking about it a Rover 214 we used to have made a similar noise but only after turning the ignition on, I suppose by priming on opening the door it speeds things up by a split second or two! Could have done with a similar system on my Berkeley T60 in the dim and distant past, used to have a 5min starting procedure that was occasionally successful :(

Thats the idea. :)
