Just my luck...

Featured Replies

When I bought my car it had 59,000 on the clock and no history of a cambelt change so I asked for money off to get it done but he offered to get it done at a dealer himself... As long as I got a receipt I was fine with it (I took this advice from a buyers guide thread).

I got a receipt and it came to £390. Jobs a good'un... I bought the car. The place that did the cambelt was responsible for servicing the car for the last 3 years too. In fact they even sold the car to the previous owner.

Today Ali at Unit 18 sends me this photo:

It turns out they used paint to mark up the pulley and it was 2 teeth out and has been for the last 8,000 miles through heavy use, multiple track sessions, etc...

Ali said it would explain a lot of the problems I've been having with the car.

Fingers crossed...

Thats shocking, do you think the garage scammed the guy who sold you it or was he in on it?

It's just been put on wrong by the looks of things. I think the work was actually carried out.

Looking on the bright side... you've now found it.

thats gotta have run like a right pig, thats why i always do my own

:'( Bad news. **** poor workmanship, the thought of this is why i use Ali for everything!

It may have just jumped. Awaiting news from Ali.

If it's been out, or even not timed up just so, it's going to run way better when Ally's finished with it. That price should have meant a belt kit, and possibly a new water pump to go with...

Just as well it's been found now and didn't get to the point that it snapped and knackered the engine !

Hopefully it hasn't done any damage with it being a couple of teeth out.

Yeah fingers crossed.. Still awaiting from Ali. Been nervous all day. :( I've been without my car for over 5 weeks now, it's painful!

Ooooh, he may have to take the head off to check valves, keep us informed

Update from Ali: i've got some results from yours but nothing conclusive, it was deffo a tooth out on the timing and has possibly damaged the top end but as i say until i'm 100% sure of everthing i wont draw any conclusions.

Hopefully there is not much damaged done.

Also if it's been changed in the past 12 months there is a possibility there might be some sort of warranty for the work carried out by the previous garage, if they used OE parts - could be worth while looking into.

Yep it was done under a year ago. I'll try and dig out the receipt.

No date on the receipt but it was after 24th September, 2010 as the invoice number is higher. He used the same garage for all servicing.

It was carried out by: "Fenn Motor Works Ltd: Rolls Royce, Bently and Jaguar Specialists" (34 Bennet Road, Reading, Berkshire, RG2 0QX - 0118 987 2006 - http://www.fennmotorworks.co.uk)

Engine timing belt - Replace engine timing belt' date=' guides and tensioner.

Labour: 3 hours (£202.50)

Parts: £108.90

Total: £365.90[/quote']

How would I prove that it wasn't done right though? Is it even possible?

Your proof is the timing belt, but to get it sorted under warranty might require the car going back to the garage

Latest update: compression is good, head gasket test says negative so keep an eye on coolant temp/level.

I told you to have it checked back at Prept... could have saved you some issues lol
