xenon headlights

Featured Replies

Hi all just wondered if anybody knows if the xenon headlight assemblys are plug and play, or are more parts required. Just thinking about upgrading as i don`t believe the se spec that i just bought ,and collect on sunday has this option

To get retro-fitted OE Xenon's to work as they come out of the factory you will need the headlights, bulbs, ballasts and headlight self levelling system as well getting them re-coded with VCDS (that's IF the control unit is the same?) all this will be well into 4 figures - £thousand(s)

An easier way would be to fit a Xenon kit to your existing headlights, these will be better than the halogens fitted but obviously not as good as the OE Xenon's (as they also have AFS.)

But they may be no use to you when the car needs it's 1st MOT as they are talking about checking for after market kits.

Ah ok similar to what i did on my old audi then its just that i saw a front set of the lights on ebay

Skoda Superb Bi Xenon Headlights with AFS Item number: 180680709637

thought these might have the ballasts inside the light assembly and thought that it may have the wiring loom already in the car and would just have exchange these for the origonal units and change the light switch to include one with height adjust :p

starting bid £400

as for VCDS is this similar to VAG-com ? a system which i have and use for servicing audis , i believe this works on skodas as well but have not tried it before , but i know it supports OBD II :|

I would imagine the seller bought a pair of bare LHD lights and transferred his bulbs and ballasts into them?

You should already have the height adjustment on your (halogen) light switch, this is very different to the way they self level out of the factory though!

VCDS is the 'new' name for VAG-COM (Ross-Tech changed the name VAG-COM to VCDS in 2008) however not all VAG-COM cables are the real deal, many have been copied and only the genuine Ross-Tech interface (cable) will work on the newer CANBUS enabled VAG cars.

Probably the easiest way (but not the only) way to know if you have a genuine interface will be the price you paid for it, if you paid less than £200 for a new interface (they are currently around £260) then it will be a copy and therefore limited in it's use, they also work on all VAG marques: Audi VW, Skoda, Seat, Bentley.

thanks again Gizmo68 , i have the ross-tech cable bought it about 5 years ago and its probably been a year or so since i have done an update as soon as i read your reply i remember seeing vcds on the start up screen , just so used to calling vag-com .

I suppose quite alot can be done with the VCDS on the skoda ?, i was pretty limited what you could do on early 1998 Audi A8`s , i have had 5 in the past and loved them all but the 4.2 V8 was just getting silly to fill up with a 90 litre tank and a range of about 400 on a good day  it was time to go to a oil burner

so lets hope she lives up to the write ups :)

I suppose quite alot can be done with the VCDS on the skoda ?

Erm yes just a bit! :giggle:

Depending on the age and spec of the car here are some of the things that can be done

with maxidot MFD display,

VCDS only.

(These are just off the top of my head, there are no doubt others things I have forgot about)

Selective locking/unlocking of doors

Anti-hijack - doors lock automatically over (IIRC) 15mph

Alarm chirp and or indicator flash on locking and unlocking car.

Cornering lights activated.

DRL's activated / de-activated.

Coming home / leaving home lights enable & you can adjust the length of time they are on.

Fog lights used as CH /LH lights - useful when Xenon's are fitted.

Removing seatbelt warning chime (driver & passenger seat)

Large digital mph display on the MFD.

Cruise control speed display on MFD (only on petrol engined cars).

Dissable the tailgate beeps (estate).

MPG display calibration.

Instrument 'staging' (needle sweep when you turn the ignition on)

Longlife (variable) service indicator reset.

This list is far from exhaustive, but it's all I can think of at the moment
