Air filter

Featured Replies

hello all I'm going to atempt to post some pics of my filter, can anyone tell me what kind it is ? is it an induction kit ? cai ? as you can see in one of the pics, the rubber hose is splitting on it and guessing I need to sort it asap, but if its a decent filter I'll try and get a new rubber bit, if its crap then I'll simply replace the whole lot.....

Also can anyone tell me what this pipe is ? and where it should be connected to ?

Gaziphone017.jpg

oh and a quick pic of my car, I'll try and get some better ones later

never herd of the filter but unfortunately looks like a cheapo univeral jobbie, personally i would bin it, the pipe you pictured is meant to attach to the standard airbox, its for the secondary air pump which runs on start up, should have a little breather filter put on it when fitting and induction kit, looks like its been cut short too so your struggle to reattach it to a standard airbox

Perfect excuse to remove the pump and egr system

Perfect excuse to remove the pump and egr system

what benefits would I get from removing these things ? could I not just get a filter for the end of it ? the writiung on the filter says 'tuned by Matrix'

As TrevorB33 said, that air filter won't be doing you any favours in terms of performance. Not only is the split pipe allowing unfiltered air in, it's sucking in hot air from the engine bay which is going to be losing you a few bhp. It looks like there's a section of the plastic secondary air pump missing too.

filter will be replaced in the next day or two, as soon as I decide what to replace it with, and source one, will the mk4 golf filters fit ? whats my best course of action with this secondary air pump pipe ? I don't have much freetime or mechanical knowledge to do too much with it right now, could I simply not place a filter on the end, and secure it better for now ? thanks for the help and advice so far :)

ok I have managed to fit a small filter onto the end of the loose pipe, and secured it better than it was with the sticky tape lol, while there I noticed that the radiator fans were running all the time, this isn't normal is it ? please tell me I haven't bought a duffer, the oil is nice and clean, coolant is also nice and clean, car isn't overheating and drives well and pulls like a train

ok after a few searches, and the reading of some very interesting posts, I realised I've been driving round for the last week with the aircon on (and still getting reasonable mpg lol), just pressed the econ button and both fans have stopped woo hoooo got to say great forum you have here, some very helpful and informative posts, you should all be very proud :) do you ever have meets or anything ?

Yes air filter box & pipework from a mk4 Golf is the same as fitted to your Octy. I would advise you to put a good replacement panel filter in the standard air box, i.e. K&N, Green cotton, etc.

thats exactly what I normally do with my cars, but I quite like the induction noise, might buy a cheap ebay special for now, and then in a month or so buy the full carbon cai (once the bank balance builds up a bit more and I can get away with it without her indoors finding out lol)

The filters on the cheap ebay CAI's are rubbish, & I've heard tales of the coating inside the pipework flaking off & entering the engine

If you want more induction noise you can drill some holes in the bottom of the standard air box, which a lot of people have done, but can't say i've ever done it myself.

Here is a earlier link to this topic and i provided some example CAI and links in the thread and pic of mine for reference

Although you mention not following the route of drilling holes in the std airbox, what is a effective option is to add a 3" ducting to the std airbox and to route it down to the front bumper to increase airflow into the std airbox. A number of members have done this to good effect.

Here is the thread on that in the techi guides. (ignore my drilled holes if that is not your thing)but shows you the piping etc.

I used to run a ebay CAI for a year with no problems. I just swapped the filter for a k&n cone.

I now run the modified airbox and 3" air feed, although the CAI gives a bit more noise I've found mine runs better this way

I'm liking the idea of the 3" pipe connected to the airbox as my primary aim is to keep the car pretty much standard performance wise, the car is used quite a bit on a regular basis and I'm wanting to keep the mpg as high as possible but ultimately keep the car reliable as I work a 24hr standby system and breaking down in the middle of nowhere is not something I really want to be doing. There is a Powerflow exhaust on the car, where the backbox has been removed and the standard tailpipe welded back on which I quite like, its not as loud as you'd expect it to be, certainly not as loud as the scoobies etc you see flying around lol and it looks a very proffesional job. thanks again for the advice :)
