MDI connector location - where is it?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

sorry for the naive question: the user manual of my Octavia (A5 I guess, it has been built in May 2011) states that the MDI connector is in the glove compartment. But I just can find it... maybe it is not available in the Ambition??

Thanks

Stefano

MDI is usually an optional extra. Did you actually order it as part of the build order? I'd have expected the dealer to ask what type of interface cable you require also (mine did)

Indeed I did not order it... I thought it was standard and you only had to buy the proper cable... well, never mind, either MP3 CD or the line-in will do :-)

Cheers

Stefano

You'll probably see in the Owner's Manual that there's an asterisk mark next to the MDI section. This means it's an optional extra and/or available in only some territories the car's sold in.

As said, it's an optional extra here, but if you did have it you would see a connector in the glovebox. Connector is shaped to allow the top part of this cable to fit:

OK, that's definitely missing... I've checked the price list, it's approx 160eur to this optional. Which IMO is quite a lot, since I assume the Audio system is already MDI-ready. So should we pay that money for a connector?

What you're paying for is a little bit more than the connector I posted above - that was just to illustrate what type of connection to look for in your glovebox

The MDI system consists of a module, plus wiring loom into the back of the headunit - and then one of the connectors listed above.

Example of the bits (that kit is actually for glovebox fitting, but you get the idea):

Whether you consider that good value for money though, is another matter entirely :)

It's a good system though emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Well, if it' an add-on like that, maybe the cost is right :-)

Hope the explanation helped. The kit can be retrofitted, if you see fit :)

To make it worse, here in Australia it is both an option ($270 when I purchased mine) plus the cables are only sold as an ipod/usb/somthing else kit for around $100. As with most people, I bought the approiate cable on ebay from the UK for around $25 delivered.

This maybe a really stupid question but I have ordered the MDI for our new octavia, can my iphone 4 plug straight into the MDI or do I need another cable?

You need the MDI iPod cable, which will connect the iPhone to the MDI interface. Check the spec sheet when you ordered though, as I understand the kit comes with both USB and iPod connecting cables. But I know some people who've not received the cables and have had to chase the supplying dealer for them.

Certainly I know with the Golf, both these cables are included as my friend has just ordered a GTi and I noticed it specifically mentions it on the specification. I would expect Skoda to be the same - but check :)
