Have I done something stupid?

Featured Replies

To cut a long story short, took my Octy vRS in to Winner today ref. the coil pack recall, and whilst wandering about the forecourt with SWMBO the following caught our eye.

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_popup.jsp?did=121783&pageid=1&originalid=&gid=nogroup&tid=2&start=5&distance=0&adcategory=cars&channel=DEALERPAGE&id=201127396179474

She loved it, I've been thinking to change the the old vRS for a while, so following a 20 minute drive and play with it, we've bought it (for considerably less than the asking price I hasten to add)

I know it's high mileage, it was a reps car, but I've seen the service book, serviced by Winner's from new. New DPF and cam belt, Body / paintwork nearly perfect, interior excellent (mats a bit worn, but better than mine) and after a haggle on the price for cash vs. mileage, they've agreed to 3 months warranty, 2 "mid range" new front tyres, 6 months tax, service, fluids and filter change and MOT.

Then I logged on here to have a look around the Superb forum instead of the Octy one I usually frequent and discovered the oil pump problem with the 2.0 PD engine.

So my question is, is there any way of telling from the engine number if this is an affected model (the thread referred to below seems to suggest not, but is a bit confusing), or have I just chucked £2.5k away in exchange for worrying if it's going to go mammaries vertical at any minute?

Bl**dy impulse buys!!!!!!!!

Take it back and tell them you don't want it. Pile of rubbish.

rotodiesel.

a friend of mine taxi driver has the same car. the car has just reached 200.000 miles he has spent hardly spent any money on this car and recons its the best cab he has ever had.even the seat is still ok and he is twenty two stone

Some people smoke 40 a day and live to be 100.

Hmmm, I suspect this is a case of "buy in haste, repent at leisure".

Did he push it the 200k miles?

Quite possibly yes!

Take it back and explain it doesn't fit in your garage, so you want your Octy back.

Tell them something they already know - the damned thing is not fit for purpose.

Be prepared to eat some humble pie at the garage and see how they respond. They're not obliged to do anything after all. Good luck.

Why is everybody so negative, if you look on what car reviews they say this is a good car even the owners think the same.

give the guy a chance he has only just bought the car and it does have full service history cant be that bad

Have you spoken to the dealer about your concerns?

Is pump covered by warrenty? If so can the warranty be extended?

Because the 2.0 140PD is a dog of an engine that has a badly designed oil pump.

The car itself can be made great - just sort the inevitable water ingress issues out and the car will be as good as any other on the road and better in many respects, but that engine is best avoided

Agreed with Gizmo

thanks for all of the replies.

You're probably right - buy in haste, repent at leisure, but when they said how much will you offer, and eventually haggled around £3,500 (them having sort-of admitted that 2nd hand high mileage Mk 1 Superbs are fairly hard to shift, and that really they wanted it off the forecourt soon or it was going to auction - probably saleman's BS) which I suspect is what they allowed as trade in against a new one.

(PS - typo in first post - it was £3500 for cash, not £2500)

So, since Friday I've had a chat with my local friendly independent VAG specialist and a mate who does a lot of taxi and hire cab servicing work. Both seem to reckon that the problems arose 5 or 6 years ago with the original pump shaft, and that most of them went within the 3 year warranty period, or at around 30,000ish miles, hence they haven't ever seen hardly any with the problem.

The rest of the car seems to be spot on, and having been a Coy. car driver regularly racking up 25k a year I have no problem with high mileage cars providing they have FSH. To average 30,000 a year it will probably have been mainly confined to longish M/Way trips which don't knock a car about much.

I now do about 20k per year in the vRS, and tbh it is getting a bit tiring (and tired)so a large diesel lump with space for 5 adults was what we were sort of looking for.

The vRS is going to get SORN'd and rejuvenated as funds become available, so if it does go bang I'll have her to fall back on. If it doesn't I reckon the Superb will have paid for herself by the end of 3 yrs / 200,000 miles and she'll get chopped in for something else.

So, and as SWMBO decided she loves it compared to the vRS, we're going to keep it.

Only time will tell if that's a stupid decision, but at least I'll be able to say to her "You were the one who was so keen on it, I wanted the MkII vRS we looked at but you kept on about uncomfortable ride, I'm too old to play boy racers, B) already got 6 points on licence etc.etc."

I'll let you all know how I get on with it - if I'm unlucky you'll all be able to go "nyah nyah, told you so"

Wish me luck

Hope all goes well and you enjoy it
