TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver

Featured Replies

Anyone use one of these with TomTom v3 on a PocketPC? I'm trying to use it with my iPaq 1940 but can't seem to get any signal. It hooks up via BT ok and I can see it's getting a decent signal that way.

But when I run TomTom I just get 'GPS position unreliable' all the time and can't pull up any GPS information (co-ords, direction etc)

I've just done a full reset on the PocketPC and TomTom's the only extra bit of software I have loaded on at the moment, just to see if that would clear the problem. But apparently not :thumbdwn:

Any ideas?

Cheers, Steve.

When you go into the GPS status is it getting any GPS signal?

I saw a post recently on a GPS forum that suggested that you leave the receiver connected, with a good signal, for half an hour or so. This should allow the GPS to get a good fix.

half hour? the one my boss has got gets signal within seconds.

First time it is used it needs to download the full almanac. Subsequent starts only need the updates, so they are quicker.

The rightmost LED flashes green every time the GPS receives a fix (roughly once a second). No flashing usually means that the view of the satellites is obscured.

If the PDA recognises the incoming GPS stream, the GPS will be listed on the GPS status screen - it's COM8 on my iPaq 3970, but may be something different on yours.

........And so will yours, eventually. It just needs a good signal for a while, so it can orientate itself for the first time.

The same applies to my eTrex Vista handheld GPS. It's fine once it knows which part of the world it is in - but it does need thinking time if move to a significantly new location when switched off.

It is not a Haicom GPS device is it, with an 'e' at the end of the name/number (e.g. 303e)? If it is, this contains the "Evermore" chipset (hence the 'e') and I can tell you that if you have this, your reciever's GPS capabiliities are shot!!! This chip has some serious issues, I know, I had 2

If not, hope you can sort it out. Try downloading a program to interogate the GPS and factory reset it (can't remember what it called, do a google).

Have you made sure that the TomTom software is set up to recieve it's gps info via the bluetooth port not the serial port?

Had to reinstall TomTom onto my Ipaq a while ago and could'nt figure out why it was finding the reciever via bluetooth but was'nt showing any gps info! Had a search round the settings for TomTom and found it was setup to recieve gps from the serial port instead.

Think this is the default setting when installing TomTom to your Ipaq.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips guys. It's the actual TomTom BT GPS receiver, so there'll be no Haicom problems here!

I might try leaving it for a while longer, see if it picks up anything. The TomTom software is set to look to the BT GPS receiver, so that rules out the serial port issue.

Cheers

Thanks for the info - I've had another go with it tonight. I can't get another freeware app to pick it up either (GPSDash). The iPaq is recognizing it, as the blue light is on constantly, and I do seem to be getting satellite fixes, as the green indicator is flashing every second or so. The serial port is COM5 on my 1940. The GPS info window is just grey, no info at all.

So I'm a bit stumped at the moment :(

I had this problem the other day after months of it working fine. The PDA is communicating with the GPS but the messages aren't reaching TT. I deleted the pairing between the PDA and the GPS and then re-paired it, this seemed to fix everything.

I use a Palm with an external GPS aerial/receiver.

One day it stopped working telling me it had NO GPS FIX.

After loads of soul searching and head scratching I used the Weapon of Mass Distraction on it and pressed "RESET" on the Palm.

Strange thing is I lost none of the info on the Palm but it unlocked the GPS port and it worked fine again.

It's done it a few times since then, but pressing reset cures it without any apparent harm.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I managed to sort it but forgot to let you guys know in this thread! It was to do with switching the virtual BT COM ports over. Changed from Port 5 to 8 in TT3 setup and all is now well :D

Just about to sort out getting a dash mount and it'll be full steam ahead then. Will look forward to getting lost

Steve

I've just ordered a brodit proclip as reviewed on pocketgps.co.uk.

The dashmount I've got at the moment is c**p, it is a generic goose neck thing, it rattles all the time and the vibrations through the goose neck make the screen almost unreadable.

I'll do a review of it once it turns up and I get it fitted.

Yep, I'm going with a Brodit solution as well. They seem to get decent reviews and look to be good quality. There's no way I'm going anywhere near a big bendy mount stuck to the windscreen :thumbdwn:

Steve

Which mount are you going for ? I like my PDA on the right hand side of the Steering wheel but according to brodit they only make the right mount bracket for the Classic on the Octy and apparently the dash is different in the Elegance  but I guess I'll find out as I've got the right mount one on order from handnav with the active pda mount for my pda (a pocket loox 420)

I was looking at the Passive Mount (may go for an active one as I might be able to get one for a decent price) with a vent Proclip for my Furby. I want to attach it to one of the centre dash vents.

I can't see why you'd need different mounts for different Tavia versions?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! Just got it and neither bit fits ... the Classic dash must be different :( and the power connector in the mount is about 1 mm out so it doesn't fit either.

:(
