Paint cracking

Featured Replies

Hi all,

would value your thoughts.........

I have two paint issues on my octy II 2.0 tdi estate in red.

1) - between boot and roof sill (only visible when you open the boot), the red top paint has come off just leaving the basecoat - always been washed by hand and not by pressure washer.

See pics 3 and 4 - although it looks pitted (thats just the basecoat rather than any damage as such)

2)) - paint along line in the roof just alongside the roof rails has started to crack on both sides (no damage or chips etc) just cracks along the line - see crack on corner of the white element (pics 1 and 2) - crack is about 8mm long and there is about 7 of them

Apologies if i have added photos incorrectly.

The car was first registered in May 2005.

Any thoughts as to whether or not i could get Skoda to do something about, or is it just tough luck as i am put of the 5 year period? I phoned Skoda customer care and they basically said go away!

Any comments appreciated.

Sale of Goods Act?

You would reasonably expect that paint on a modern car would not start cracking or flaking after 6 years unless there was a defect.

Be a hard one to prove though, although I remember when I worked for Vauxhall that they resprayed hundreds of metallic red Cavaliers because the roof looked like it had been shot blasted after about 5 years. All done FOC as they admitted a defect (eventually).

I feel your pain mate - I've just spent my own money on getting my bootlid repainted as Skoda said a rust spot wasn't covered under warranty. The two paintshops I received quotes from (one a current approved VAG repairer and the other a former approved VAG repairer) couldn't believe Skoda woudn't honour this.

Good luck with trying to get anything out of Skoda.

I have what looks to be the same problem. Posted about it here

Despite all the respray scare stories I put it down to flexing of the vehicle body under spirited driving. As rich453 says, there is a sealant strip here which will be naturally more flexible than the paint/laquer.

Once you know they are there it's annoying but hopefully there are no long term implications.
