Gearbox chattering rattle.

Featured Replies

My 2008 Fabia 11, (1.4, 16 valve) at 31000 miles has developed an irregular chattering rattle at tickover, from the gearbox area?, worse when cold.

this goes when clutch is depressed. no obvious noise from gears at present whilst driving.

Main dealer has listened to it and confirmed that there is a noise, and has checked that gearbox oil level is O.K.

Has suggested letting the noise develop further, and see what develops!.

Anyone with ideas?.

The usual culprits are...clutch thrust bearing rattling with foot off clutch, clutch friction plate springs wearing and rattling at tickover with foot off clutch, gearbox input shaft bearings becoming noisy. Clutch cover assembly can be a bit noisy if becoming very worn if it uses coil springs, but not sure what your engine uses on that. Either way, it should be easy to fix once identified. Please let us all know what your dealer finds eventually. Good luck.

sounds very much like estate man mentioned,

I'd say thrust bearing worn.not a overlly easy fix though as it's a gearbox out jobbie and new clutch kit required.so can be expensive to fix due to labour rate as most garges charge roughly 3 hours for gearbox removal/fittment.
