Early Winter Tyre Question

Featured Replies

Have trawled through the other winter tyre threads and can't see an answer to this one. If I've missed it not for want of trying.

Superb Elegance 140CR DSG, std tyre size 225/40 R18 92Y

Now on the spare set of rims for my Volvo I have a nearly new set of Conti TS830 but 205/55 R16 91H

Obviously the rims won't fit, but anyone agree these would be OK for winter use on the Superb on the appropriate 16" rims?

My logic is that this is the same spec as the tyres for the Superb Greenline II, so as long as I inflated them to the higher pressures that would be OK. I have rather assumed that the higher pressure is not just to get lower rolling resistance but also because of the lower load factor 91 vs 92, and that as long as I told the ins company there should be no issues.

Logical?

Perfectly logical and yes they are the perfect size - just what I ran last winter.

Your assumption that using the Greenline pressure figures for the narrower tyres is correct, but not for the reason you think. In general, tyre pressure has an inverse relationship with tread width, but load index doesn't come into it.

If I'm not wrong the load factor for R16 is 94 and not 92.

From June 1 2011 brochure

Elegance Combi

18" 'Themisto' alloy wheels (7.5J x 18" 225/40 R18 92Y)

Elegance Greenline II

16†‘Spectrum’ alloys Optimised rolling resistance tyres (205/55 R16 91H)

But then it wouldn't be the first time the brochure and website have been shown to be wrong, how many instances was it for the Yeti?
