My Fabia VRS fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Hi folks, Me and the mrs have been having a little competition to see who can get the best fuel consumption on our commute to work, we both work at the same place and take it in turns to drive the Fabia, it's a mix of urban and extra urban driving and it's around 18 miles each way. So, I have been beaten hands down so far by her and all I can put it down to is that I have a heavier right foot lol oh and just to prove how good her driving is she took a picture to prove it lol

Ah! but is she a good fast driver too?

Tony

does it take longer to arrive at work when your Mrs is driving?

47.7mpg is still impressive, even if driven slowly mine don't get anywhere near that....but then I don't drive very slowly

You let your wife drive it.......:rofl:

30mph in 7th is not for me. We all know that driven normally you are lucky to get 35mpg over a 12 month period.

That's not driving slowly but it is sticking mainly to speed limits, it is however driving more carefully ie taking ur foot off Going down hill or backing off slightly when u reach ur target speed! And yes, I let her drive it, she's actually a better driver than me and of course is saving us money too lol

I find just sticking to limits and using the throttle as little as possible helps massively

On average I get about 32 MPG across tanks, but if I go to my girlfriends, it's about 12 miles at a constant 40mph, I get around 45-55 MPG - that is with very light throttle use, little acceleration, constant speed and one set of traffic lights to stop at the whole time I am travelling.

I've seen high 40's on the rare occasion I stick to 60ish on the motorway.. and almost 40mpg even on my commutes into Manchester..it drops a bit if there is a "cheeky" repmobile driver at the lights though :giggle:

I have a mate with a Focus ST who is seriously considering swapping to a vRS purely because he does quite a high mileage and struggles to get more than about 25/26 while commuting.Yup..the ST is probably a little better at everything apart from when he is filling his petrol tank up and he was very impressed when I took him for a spin in mine !

Notice you can't see the trip mileage? Lol she's prob only done one mile in neutral downhill and took that lol :D

I once got over 50 mpg on my 12.5 mile trip to work (never in a rush to get there) and quite often get over 45. Strange always seem to get a lot less on the way home.

There’s always quite a bit of traffic about although it does move quite freely and there’s no point overtaking because the idiots that do end up saving a minute or 2 at best. What’s the point its only work. :giggle:

Tips I’ve picked up over the years

As you say a light foot and just let the car roll down the hills.

Engine off at traffic lights

Don’t hold the car at a constant speed with a constant throttle. Get up to speed and take your foot of the throttle, then let it cost with no throttle, once you have lost 2 or 3 mph a dab of throttle up to speed and cost again.

Most important keep well back from the car in front, that way if they slow down you can cost along behind them and reduces the need to hit the brakes.

Try and judge roundabouts and corners so you come off the throttle early and cost into them at the correct speed without braking.

Obviously I don’t drive like this all the time but going to work, sitting in heavy traffic with no chance/point of overtaking. At the end of the drive I’ve saved some petrol/money I can use in a way that’s more fitting for a VRS when the time and road conditions are more appropriate.

Yeah good point. I sometimes do the opposite. Leave going to work as late as possible and rush in. Adds a bit of excitement to my day

Whoever said petrol can't be economical, that was with some spirited driving!

It's not. :p My diesel display was reading 94.8mpg after 39 miles this morning... Mind you, it's a bit slower. :D

I think thread was about VRS economy though... :peek:

It's not that a petrol can't be economical, but a diesel driven in the same way will be significantly more economical again.

Horses fir courses. I'd love a VRs, but doing 3,000 miles a month means I need mega efficiency

30mph in 7th is not for me.

Mine seems to like D5 at 35-40 and I've used the paddles to put it up to 6/7. It'll soon drop back to D5 though.
