Hi guys,

Just went for a test drive in a really clean and presentable 68,000 miler VRS from a Skoda Main Dealer. Really impressed with how the car is put together. Only thing is I couldn't help but think there wasn't much power. There was initial torque but felt quite a bit slower than even my MK2 Golf GTI. Just seemed to make the noise but not actually accelerate as quick as thought it would. The cars engine sounds sweet, engine bay was spotless too so it wasn't as if its a thrashed or bad example.

I've also driven my dads Golf MK4 GTI 180 (same engine) and that is a hell of alot quicker.

Is it possible that the dealers put the car in reserved state? Or are these just really slow?

They are not slow and when remapped are pretty quick!

The golf will always feel quicker as standard, less weight and no real backside to them, but even as standard it shouldn't be that slow.

It might look spotless but still have an issue with DV, N75, rotten hoses etc

Test drive another one so you can make a comparison. MAF sensor is notorious for failing & usually doesn't throw a fault code, but causes a big drop in performance. Remap is a must in my opinion as it totally transforms the performance.

For the general merit of the car I might buy it as the car has been garaged all its life and the engine bay its like new, all hoses look new still. The car drove like a new car, all very tight. Maybe if I took it too R-Tech they might figure out why its not putting out the full power?

I just hope I sell my car very soon so I can get a MK1 VRS. I tried to post up my car on here but I wouldn't let me?

I must admit coming from a 2.0 16v Corsa I was disappointed with the standard power. A remap changes that though.

Shouldnt be much heavier than the golf so Id say something may be up.

Could be a small leak?

You need to be a freedom member to advertise mate.

Don't let the dealer con you, if its semi good they can be cleaned up to look ne really easy so don't let bulls**t baffle your brain.

Thing is its had loads spent on it, 4 new tyres, cambelt kit done, been services by main dealer from new and all the way through, 68k mileage, mint interior, rears never sat in, 6 cd changer, rear parking sensors etc. On the court they are asking £4200 for it. Once bought they promise 12 months MOT and 12 months warranty parks and labour.. What do you reckon?

My only requirements for a VRS is to find a nice standard model in silver with 70,000 miles at the very most.

My first drive of a vRS was a bit of a let down too. There was nothing wrong with the car, but I was trading in a Nissan 200sx (S14). The Skoda seemed to lack any sparkle and didn't match up to the reviews. I still bought one (brand new at the time) and love it to bits. The standard map is so smooth and doesn't have a real kick in the back. A remap should change it though.

As said earlier, drive another standard car and see how it feels. They are quite deceptive in terms of how fast you are going due to the quiet exhaust and sedate manners. They are a bit of a grower. By this I mean that the longer you own one, the more you appreciate it's abilities and that for the money it's a good buy. £4200 seems to be a bit pricey, but if it's had a lot of work done then it may not be too bad a price. See if you can haggle a bit?

Did you turn the traction control off? That can hamper speed a hell of alot! Its the ASR button or ESP on the console. When it is off there is and orange circle with a warning triangle in it on the dash.

Alterantively, even though its a "minter" somewhere in its life, it could of had an issue and has gone into limp mode which turns the turbo off I believe? So it has no power what so ever. Listen for the turbo whistle.

With my vRS I find if it has been sat for days with no movement it can be a bit slow as well. Once it has run in, it is nippy.

Being a dealer they might of put duff fuel in it. These cars work best on V-power and they probably have just put supermarket 95 ron which doesn't help.

Now the big thing with a fast car is basically how fast it goes! And you may feel at low speeds, it isn't going quick but keep your foot down and as you pass 70 watch how quickly that dial increases speed! You can easily find your self doing double the speed limit in this car without it even struggling.

If you're near R-Tech then go there mate. Nick knows these engines inside and out and doesn't take the mick with the prices either.

I drove up there from Surrey and he fixed my lazy actuator before taking it to stage 2, cannot say enough good things about R-Tech :thumbup:

DBP - It had ASR but it really didn't generate that much power for any flashing lights, I've driven quicker aircooled beetles :p The turbo was whistling, sounded like everything was working, though it all went quiet after 2.5k.. The car has been sat on the forecourt for a couple of weeks. It cant be the fuel is it was lacking ALOT of grunt. I realise that these cars run smooth and are deceptive but it struggled to get to 60 in 3rd. Felt asthmatic above 2.5k.

Bertee - Yeah I've come from the golfgti forum and know just how well R-Tech are from the mighty reviews and videos that they have on youtube. I live 2hrs away but i don't mind traveling for good work as good prices.

After reading I think its a boost issue. Possibly a faulty DV valve hence not being able to hold or build the boost?

It initially started to pull well from 1,900rpm but then nothing really happens, and after being in a few 20vt's you kinda expect ww3 to kick off with the boost so I just put it down to being a slightly heavier car at the time. When I got home I checked out the specs and I realised its only 50kg's heavier than a MK4 Golf. Thats hardly anything, so must be a boost issue? Maybe when they did the cambelt its a tooth out on one of the cams?

Couldn't even hit 60 in 3rd!!?? defiantly something wrong with that car.

Exactly! Maybe I could get it checked out by R-Tech, get told whats wrong and then march it back down to skoda and get the parts fixed under warranty?

it does sound from what you say that there is some issue, but don't underestimate the effect that crap fuel can have - when I bought mine it was very flat, I put some 97SUL into an empty tank and the difference was immediate! Dealers will probably use the cheapest UL they can get and if it's sat there a good while too then it could be pretty poor.

My 1.8T nonRS stock Skoda feels slow at low revs,but after 3000 revs is much different,quite quick,very confident on overtakes,it gets to 100 mph easy

If there's something wrong with the car, which clearly there is then it either needs fixing or you walk away..why buy a car when it has problems?

There are plenty of VRS around both private and trade, just because the engine bay is clean doesn't always mean it's well looked after they may have cleaned it up to hide any leaks or problems....although many enthusiasts will clean the bay as part of the cleaning ritual

Defo something wrong with it! maybe a maf problem, like you say according to the specs should be much quicker!

Im on my second vrs now, the first one was standard for 2years then i had a revo remap even standard it was fairly quick, the one i have now has a custom map on it and is much quicker then my first one :rofl:

Could you not get someone with vag com to come look at the car with you? may highlight the problem.

When i first got my vrs i thought it was crap but it had a women driver all its life and never had its taps opened,

After 2 or 3 weeks of ownership and a tank of v power and a good thrashing it had woken up and had its power back

Mine came from the factory with the N75 hoses the wrong way around. Felt smooth, but flat- only made 150 bhp at a rolling road day. Also felt way slower than my mate's vRS. Had a nightmare getting Skoda UK to sort it- they kept saying that as no code came up, it was fine. I got a mate to hook it up to VAGCOM and the actual boost was nowhere near the requested boost at any stage. After nearly three years in that state, a (friendly!) dealer eventually agreed to have a more thorough look as the warranty was about to expire. Found the hoses were the wrong way around and replaced the N75 for good measure.

The car was absolutely transformed after this, and after a Performance Torque remap was running 212 bhp. Have added a Jetex downpipe and 100 cel cat, which also made a nice improvement. Should be around 220 bhp now, and feels it.

Pretty interesting!

I've left that car alone now. I've found another Silver VRS for sale, but only has 48,000 on the clock. Just trying to persuade the bloke to take my car as a part ex :D

I know you decided against this one but you can have my silver estate for a lot less than that which has less miles, new tyres, cambelt done and already has a map. Unfortunately I don't need a part-ex and I am a fair way from Cheshire :thumbdown:
