oem xenon bulbs in halogen headlight assembly?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I got aftermarket xenons on my fl octavia, i am getting oem xenon bulbs for the fl octavia for a good price, will they fit in my car as an easy swap?

or are the oem xenons bulbs only compatabile with oem xenon headlight assembly & not halogen ones?

Thanks..

The OEM xenon headlight assembly is totally different to the halogen one. Therefore the bulbs are not interchangeable. Xenons are a circa £700 option because they have diffent assemblies, ballasts, self levelling function and headlight washers. It is not impossible to retrofit OEM xenon lights (it's a subject that has been covered many times) but the cost of circa £1500 - £2000 IIRC makes it a non-starter - better to have ticked the option box !

If you've got aftermarket xenons in the existing headlights, I'm not sure what benefit you'll get from putting OEM bulbs in (legal issues aside).

I've got the factory fit xenons and they are very good, but not much better than the aftermarket kit I had in my old Vectra. Obviously, after-market kits are strictly speaking illegal, but my Vectra went through about 4 MOTs with them in and never caused a problem.

As has been said, the OEM bulbs simply won't fit in the original units.

I suspect the MOT changes as from Jan 2012 will effect many mods on post 2008 cars including the fitting of non OEM HID lights and removal of the DPF.

It will have done and would still pass an MOT now as they were a "grey area".

Come January 2012 they become a very "black area" and we'll start to see MOT failures on aftermarket installations.

In my opinion - a good thing, I've been dazzled too often by obvious non OEM HIDs.

I went up the aftermarket route on the last Octy but to be honest, the thing that brove me nuts was the stability of the units themselves and in the end, the improvement wasn't worth the hassle. From a legality perspective, I think its a good idea that the MOT test is going to catch them but to be honest, the non- HID octy light units have the same beamspread and identical projector lenses so they do not dazzle oncoming drivers.

Idiots with non - projector lights (Fiestas, etc) are a menace and this is what the MOT test change is really out to stop. Thats said you WILL fail an MOT from 2012 so the best bet is to fit some decent upgrade bulbs instead (Philips Extrme, Ring etc)
