Clutch drag after replacement...

Featured Replies

I had the clutch replaced on my 2004 2.0 TDi 140 a few hundred miles ago, and it's now got clutch drag - slight tendency to creep forwards if I'm not looking, plus trouble changing gear, especially out of first into neutral when not moving. Despite the slight sneaking feeling, I would be surprised if the garage had charged me E1600 for a new clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder without actually doing the work - so before I take it back, can anybody advise me on possible causes, things to look out for and potential lame excuses on their part? Thanks!

Back to the garage with it immediately!!!!!!!

Quite agree! But if anyone has any suggestions on how the might try to "do" me, it'd be helpful. Although to be honest, I've known them for 15 years, and they've always been scrupulously honest. But...

Does it make any difference if you 'pump' the clutch pedal a few times before actually changing or putting it into gear?

Simplest explanation is that there is a bit of air in the clutch hydraulic system - a five minute job for the garage to rectify on most cars with hydraulic systems for the clutch. If that is the explanation, shame the garage didn't check thay had properly bled the system before the customer collected!

Well, it does it only now and then, so it's difficult to know if pumping a bit helps - if it was anything much, it'd do it continually (he hopes!) so I'm thinking you're most probably right. That or a slightly sticky master cylinder. The slave was changed, so it should be OK.

Taking it in tomorrow, so I'll suggest that as a possible cause - thanks!
