A knock persists.....!

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Ye haven't let me down yet, so here is another question for ye all.

Past few weeks there has been a knock coming from the pass front wheel area. Particuarly bad when turning into my drive (Pass wheel would be the leading wheel you see).

Brought it to the garage in work and they had a good poke around.

Checked EVERYTHING and the only fault they could find was that there was a bit more movement with the pass side shock'n'spring than the drivers side, so suggested top mounts.

So I got top mounts and bearings, but it was a week before I could get them fitted. In this time the knock became more frequent, however this knock was slightly different. It sounds like the clicking the air-con makes sometimes (a flap catching sound), but again sill in the same area.

So the garage in work replaced the top mounts but gave me a call to say that the noise is still there.....

They are going to take another proper look next week when they get the chance.

Now lads, I know it can be absolutely anything and with out a proper description, hard to diagnose, but has anyone come across this sort of thing before??

The only other thing is that one of the mechanics in work reckon there is a bit too much play in the dog mount, however gear changes aren't clunky....? If that makes sense.

Can anyone shed any light!?

Thanks

Gavin

Obvious things are drop links and anti roll bar bushes.

Obvious things are drop links and anti roll bar bushes.

All were checked inc the sub frame bushes, all wishbone bushes, CV boots, play in the drive shafts ect.

Put full lock on, & drive slowly, if it clicks you've got a worn CV.

Doesn't click on full lock and the boots look perfect.... :(

Did they check the track rod ends? Mine was knocking badly and it turned out to be the track rod end. Also check the radiator that can make a noise aswell.

Track rods, yes, radiator, no!

Ill have to give that a go.

Thanks

I would of suggested this to. Or maybe drop links or even shock spring worn that gives excess travel

I have also seen garages rule out these kind of things but not giving them sufficient checking. So don't be surprised it could still be one of these.

Dunno the discription given sounds very like when my track rod end was on the way out before it got really bad, only certin bumps with the right amount of lock would cause the knock.

Cool, so don't rule out track rods so!

A little more info, with this knock, it is prevalent when I am setting off, or turning ect obviously, but also if I stop "abruptly" I can here it.

But if I am just cruising at 100 kmh or so, I don't hear it!?

It will be going back on tuesday so I will ask them to have another look at the track rods!

************Update*************

Fixed!!!!!

Turns out, it was the gear ox (Dogbone) mount!

I got a ECS one of Awesome, and the fitted that, so no more knock!!!

Two other things as well, if anyone else has seen the threads about cleaning behind your front wheel arches... DO IT!!!

Took quite a pile out of mine.

Second thing is, has anyone ever had to replace the bracket that holds the flexi brakes lines to the front strut!?

When cleaning the arches notices this was completely missing !!! Replaced it of course! Anyone else ever come across this??

Ive got this knock on mine, cant seem to find it! mind you not really looked as all my suspesion is new!

apart from the track rods! but there is not play in them!!

Might just get two complete ones and change them over

Check the dogbone mount so, unless you replaced that, then ignore this so.. :giggle:
