Upgrading rear speakers in a Fab vRS

Featured Replies

I’m a bit unsure as what to do with the rear speakers. I'd like to keep them in the standard place if possible (what size speakers are there at the moment?) to avoid having them on display. Im trying to keep the install looking as 'factory fit' as possible you see. In the past I’ve usually gone for 6x9s but have been looking at a set of Alpine 5x7s which come with tweeters: -

Are these poo? Am I just as well to go for Infinity Kappas? I’m probably not going to Amp anything, and if I do it’ll probably only be an 8 or 10 inch sub.

Incidentally I’m thinking about getting these for the fronts: -

Any other comments and recommendations would be great.

Cheers.

The standard ones are 13cm diameter IIRC

I know it's all down to personal preference, but I'd just get a decent set of components for the front which will fit in the OEM speaker locations. Get them powered by a decent external amp and they'll give you a nice sound. The factory HU is the weakest of the OE sound setup so I'd either amp the OE head unit, get a different head unit with a bit more power before changing the speakers.

JMTPW.

P.S I (and others) have posted lots in the ICE section if you want to read up on my sound modding. Not what you're after if you want to retain speakers in the OE locations, but it may give you some ideas :)

After replacing the standard Symphony HU last week, the sound from the standard front set up with a decent powered HU, is far better. The rears are OK but you're only going hear the sound projected from the fronts (apart from the tweeters in the rear doors).

Personally, that's all I'm going to do with the ICE. I've grown out of he stage of fitting amps & subs or 6x9s!

Thanks for the replies.

I've ordered a Becker Mexico Pro HU so I think we'll wait and see what it sounds like with the standard speakers first. Might just upgrade the fronts as tfboys says.

Oh and i'll check out the ICE section too. (Must get out the habit of only viewing new posts!)

Cheers

I will see how good/bad the originals are first. Usually do a radio 1 anyway, with TA enabled so I get the travel updates.

squeeze me?

TA = traffic announcements. Handy feature where you get traffic info auto-interrupting normal listening of CD or other radio station. Once finished, the radio auto-switches back :)

Ah, yeah I know. You just lost me for a sec cos im a bit thick that late on in the day!

Rears are 10cm. It is very tricky to get something half decent in there. I put in some 10cm components which sound a little better. The seat belt mechanics ruin any chance of getting something bigger in there.
