Skoda Estelle.

Hi,

I need advise.

I need to source a piston for a Skoda 136 engine, as the engine is tuned, and the previous owner bragged about putting 10,000RPM on the engine.

Unfortunately, it melted a part of one of the pistons.

Can anybody advise me on where to get a piston for this old car?

The engine is not original in the car, it has been fitted by one of the previous owners (it is a 120L with a 136 engine).

Thanks,

Rob

Any Favorit or Felicia 136 piston will fit. All the 1289cc 8 port engines have the same pistons with the exception being some low compression 135 engines. They arent that common and if you aim for a high end model at the scrapyard (GLXI or similar) then you wont go far wrong. If you just want one then it would be worth advertising on the Skoda OC forum.

In all honesty you would probably be better junking the engine and getting another decent one. Changing an engine only takes a few hours and wont cost a great deal....changine a piston will need bearings, gaskets and a lot more time.

As for revving to 10,000rpm  The 136 engine as standard has fairly weak pistons that break up if you regularly go much beyond 6000rpm let alone 10,000 - which isnt physically possible on this engine!

The reason i am trying to keep the original engine is because it has been tuned and i don't want to lose the extra performance. If i change the engine straight, i will lose performance. It has twin carbs, k&n filter, apparently it has bigger valves, and other bits. It has a rally stage exhaust - and when i looked at the exhaust it doesn't look very skoda-ish.

It was a hill climbing car (the sump damage (not broken) either means it hit stones or speed bumps).

Thanks for the advice, i suspected the favorit and the felicia had the same engine, but was not sure. I am pretty sure that the 136 engine was not in use in 1986 when my estelle was made.

Cheers,

Rob

Yep. Without a lot of work, if you try and rev it over 7_000, you'll start bending the pushrods (which at least stops it being over-revved enough to damage the crank, conrods, and pistons.

If he's melted a piston, it's more likely he's been running it too lean and/or with too much ignition advance.

Even with that tune you should be able to keep the tune by swapping the camshaft and head (presumes the pistons are standard; they may not be).

  • 4 weeks later...

I have not bothered swapping things over, other than the distributor cap and the exhausts/inlets/carbs.

I have 3 major issues and one minor.

1. Water pipe:

When loading the car onto the trailer, the bottom of the car hit the ramp. It damaged and ruptured the long metal pipes (both of them!!) going from the front to the rear of the car. They are both holed and are worse than a colander.

What is the best course of action to fix this problem?

2. Fuel issue

The fuel issue sounds like a blockage, but i will explain the problem. Basically what i have got is a perfectly working fuel pump, which won't get fuel from the fuel tank.

I got another piece of pipe to test the pump, and stuck into a fuel can and it sucked the fuel out of it fine, It has nearly half tank of brand new fuel (i put around 8-9 litres in, and there was some already in there).

What is the best course of action to deal with this one?

3. Starter motor

This situation has been resolved. A previous owner brought an incorrect starter motor. (It is obviously new because it ain't lagged in oil where the previous engine was pressurising and blowing the oil cap off the top of the engine.)

I have brought another starter motor for a Skoda Felicia (which is what is fitted in the car).

The starter motor was from a 105 Estelle (this will be going for sale on here soon as it is surplus to requirements.)

4. Timing.

It is either correct or 180 degrees out. I cannot check it until it get it started (i cannot do this without starter motor, this will be checked soon).

The engine out of the felicia was from a P-Reg, and it is a 135 engine, instead of a 136 engine.

I know it has been a while, so i decided to update the thread.

135 engine is not good....low power for longer life! I have a set of 136 pistons if you still need something. Not sure how you have damaged both water pipes getting onto a trailer unless you were doing 30mph at the time!!! Patch them up or find someone breaking an estelle (probably on the OC site rather than here). Car looks ok....timing is easily tested once youve got the starter up and running.

I do agree, i am aware that the 135 engine is slower, when i got it from the scrap yard i didn't realise it was a 135. When i got home, i found out. I was not that impressed, but the first stage of the operation is to get the car on the road and roadworthy, and rebuild the other engine in my spare time, and make sure i do a proper job.

Pm sent RE: pistons.

Cheers,

Rob
