Convenience module or cables - how do I know?

Featured Replies

Hi! I bought an Octavia 1999 estate here in Norway a week ago, and it has a few problems. The front left window regulator doesn't work. It is the driver's side here, so my wife isn't too happy about that one, especially since the thing has stopped 1,5 cm open, so I had to gaffa tape it shut (without gaffatape and strips no car in Norway would run...). A neighbour has a bunch of VAG cars, and he has the most advanced diagnostic tool you can buy here (programming keys and other stuff, error codes and all that). This is the readout from it:

The 00944 on the two mirrors I know are burnt out heaters, so I have ordered those on eBay from Germany (buying car parts in Norway is for the very rich or the very stupid - prices are 2-3 times higher than in Germany or UK on European cars and up to 4-5 times higher than the US on US cars). I have read a bit around and found out that the first error means that the convenience module is working in single cable mode, but maybe that's on later models, with Canbus?

The rear left window is not a problem, that can still be controlled from the rear left door (I had to use a jumper cable from the main power cable to the switch in that door, that made it work). But then there's the front window. I know that the safe mode thing can be either the module itself or cables. The problem is how I can be sure what it is, since the module costs a bit of money, and I really would like not to buy something that doesn't help. :) Is it a hint that I see the full 12.4 V in the main power into the convenience module? And that all the other windows work like they should? And that the electric adjustment of the mirrors does not work? I did open the rubber boot in the door, and I could not see any damaged cables. But I know that in Passats there is a plug underneath the front seat that often corrodes. Is there something like that in the Octavia I as well?

Today I am planning to remove the convenience module from the door and give the regulator motor power directly to see if it moves then. Would that be an indication to what's wrong?

Finally if it's the module it seems like it is an 1J0 959 799 AH0 5N, and it seems like that's difficult to find. I can't see it anywhere on eBay, and that number only seems to be available on Russian websites. In Norway they want around £500 for it, and that's just more than I can afford now. Any idea where I can find that? It's different from the regular modules in that the plug is on the short end, the thing is plugged directly into the driver's side (again left) regulator motor again on the short end, and that end is around 45 degrees angled. Does that sound familiar to anybody here?

Hope somebody can help me out, I'm used to working on my Chevy Suburban, but that is soooo simple compared to these cars. Thanks in advance (yes, I'm an optimistic bugger)!

Funny. Turned out to be neither. It was a bad connection between the convenience module and the motor (from July 1999 to July 2000 has a convenience module that's clipped on to the driver's side regulator motor). A bit of contact grease fixed it. All working now. :)
