MFD2 to MFD3 install

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

I am about to replace my current MFD2 unit with a MFD3, would this be a straight swap? I have the maxidot and that currently works fine and have also done the tweeks for the centre aux and cd changer earth.

Also how easy would it be for me to set up the MFD3 so that my iphone / ipod works with it?

many thanks

Adam

I would check your CAN gateway revision first.

As you mention both iPhone and iPod, I presume you want the MFD3 to be able to access music on both of these? For that you'll need to retrofit the MDI interface. There are kits on eBay. Example: http://goo.gl/gi9uK - this can be fitted in the armrest or glovebox.

CAN gateway - please expan on this, I have just had the unit in the car and it seems to work but no maxidot or sound?

Dependant on your CAN gateway revision it's possible you'll get battery drain when you upgrade to the MFD3. Have a search on here about it, there's quite a few threads covering it in detail.

As for Maxidot and sound, the unit will need to be coded to your car - either by a dealer VAS system, or someone with VCDS.

What year is your car?

OK.

So if you've never touched the CAN gateway in your car (presume you haven't, it's fitted behind the glovebox) and the MFD3 you have is the latest revision, with V7 maps - it will drain the battery.

You can avoid this issue with earlier versions of the MFD3, with older firmware - but you don't get access to as many features as the current revision and mapping offers.

Hope this helps.

Ah Ha! I think I will stick with the MFD2 then!

Many thanks for your help!
