Wheel Bearing

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2010 VRS with 9,000 miles on the clock. I had an issue a few months ago where a droning noise from the front right of the car was audible around 60 - 75mph, especially on motorway driving. It was intermittent and did seem to be more audible when the car was cold or on certain roads.

I though initially it may have been uneven tyre wear so I changed over wheels to a spare set but it was still there.

Took the car along to my local dealer who went for a quick test drive and diagnosed it as a wheel bearing based on the sound so I got it booked in and this was changed. This complete cured the noise.

That was about 6-7 weeks ago, and 1500 miles later the exact same noise has just returned.

I will be taking it back to the dealer again to look at it but I wondered if anyone else has had this noise/issue as it is strange that after fitting a new bearing (I assume this is what was done as that is what they told me they would do) the noise would return again after so little miles?

Is there anything else they should be checking?

Thanks

From personal experience- tyre stepping. Run your hand around the circumference of the tyres. It may feel rougher one way than the other. I get a droning when fully laden at the higher tyre pressures. At normal pressures its reasonably quiet.

Could be that the dealer damaged the new bearing when they pressed it into the housing. If they pressed on the inner race instead of the out race then this could damage the brg.which could show up much later.

Thanks for the replies.

Took it into the dealer and typically there was no noise. On the way home (after the dealer had closed) it started again.

It is very intermittent so I'm going to have to book the car in for a few days and let the dealer drive it. It is only really audible between 50 and 70 and doesn't get louder with speed, just comes and goes which isn't typcial of a wheel bearing issue

i have exactly the same noise on mine....

i have a '10 vrs dsg and i started to get a droning noise at about 30,000 but on the passenger side for me. it seems to be a cycling noise its hard to explain on here i guess and i sound like an idiot when i try to do the noise to people too!!

anyway i have got to 38'000 and finally had chance to take it to the dealers and they have diagnosed the exact same thing. they said they would order one and give me a call...

i hope it solves the problem as the noise is finally driving me insane!!

any other news on yours?

No news. I have to leave it in for a few days so the technicians can listen to it as otherwise they are just guessing. The new bearing did cure the noise for the past two months but then it returned. They may have damaged the new bearing fitting it as mentioned above.

It would be odd for a damaged bearing to be noisy intermittently though. They usually just get more and more noticeably worse.
