Service or problem?

Featured Replies

Don't know if anyone else is in the realms of post 40k service and could help.

I have the octavia vRS.47,500 on the clock and it is now telling me it requires a service exactly one year from the 40,000 service.

From the threads I have read it is on variable sevicing and therefore could tell me it needed a service at any time between the last service up to two years.

It just seems very coincidental that it is exactly one year since the 40k service and I have only done 7,500(heavy traffic)miles. So could the car be suggesting a problem or is it definately as simple as the display tells me?

Finally(and I am grateful for help) I am planning cam belt change at 60,000 but am wondering if it is worth getting it done now,at the same time I book in for the service (nearly 50,000) or am I worrying unneccessarily?

Thanks in advance :)

Changing the cambelt would be fine at 60k but it would obviously do it no harm before then.

You car has the option of fixed interval servicing, it may have been changed to that at it's last service.

Check that the dealer definitely did a variable service on it last time. You might find that it's been switched to fixed, or even that the service indicator has just been switched to fixed.

Leaving the cambelt for another 10k miles shouldn't be a problem - I hear they last to 80k ish miles, but if it is playing on your mind, then you can always get them to do it early :D

When the dealer stamped the service record for the 40K service, he should have also have complete the 'Next service' box below that and also affixed a sticker to the RHS of the dash indicating when that service is due. Either get your dealer to check the service indicator settings, or get someone local with VAG-COM to do it for you.

Thanks for the replies.Looked at the service book at lunchtime. The history reads:-

Delivery Inspection 28/6/01 then under 'next service' someone has hand written 10,000 miles or 27/6/02 whichever comes first.

25/2/2002 service carried out at 10843 miles.Under next service someone has hand written 'variable'

23/2/04 service carried out at 39155 miles.Under next service, again hand written 'variable' (this is just before I bought it)

Now virtually one year to the day and only about 7500 miles later I am being called in for a service by the car.Bit disappointed on the mileage front though.

I will follow the advice and get the garage to check.I am presuming it is still variable as no requests have been made to change it and therefore the car just wants a service now! I hope so!

Tell me if the history looks odd though. Thanks again

Right.I think I am now totally confused.

Rang the dealer to book in.Asked me when last service was.Told them 40k last year in feb.Ask me if it's fixed or variable.Told them variable but wondering if changed to fixed by them at the last service.

Hushed discussion with colleague. Then told "it won't need a service. It's too early having only done another 7.5 k.The service reminder just needs switching off.Pop in anytime except lunchtimes and we will reset it."

Whats this all about  Can I simply risk accepting that

Does this ever actually happen?

Thanks

Yeah this is perfectly fine, i brought my car with 2300 miles on the clock..... before they sold it to me they gave it a service even though it was only that mileage and 6 months old. One year on (approx 3000 miles - didnt use car much then!!) service indicator came up.... took it back as id been told it was on variable service and handbook sticker confirmed this.... they just reset it.
