Front Indicator/Fog Lamp Failure - Tale of Woe

Featured Replies

A few days before going in for first (variable) service, at 18,500 miles, the front offside indicator and fog lamp failed. Dealer contacted - please replace both when doing service (I've read the excellent info on this forum re dismantling the front of the car to remove the headlight, and didn't fancy doing it myself!). So, 9th August, in it goes. "We can't do the indicator - a modification is required; we'll order one in". That's the replacement cap? I wait to be contacted again. Dealer rang, "We've got the part". Rebooked in for 19th August.

"Would you like the good news or the bad news?" I asked for the bad news first. "We've replaced both lamps, and they still don't work. We think you need a new headlamp unit".

And the good news? "There's no charge for the lamps, and the problem should be resolved under warranty. We just need to confirm with Skoda". I was shown about 8 pages of test results which were to be sent off in support.

Skoda have now confirmed its a warranty job: we're booked back in for 31st August to have it done. My dealer is going to pick the car up from my house and return it afterwards - fair game. But it has taken 30 extra miles so far to discover they can't do it. Another 30 at my expense soon to come but at least I don't have to drive them myself! The difficulty of changing the lamp, and the failure of the unit, means I will have been illegal for over 3 weeks!

Let's hope all is sorted 31st! I'll update soon.

Looks like the VAG numpty design division haven't been sacked yet. All you need is a lamp fixed - most vehicles 10 mins/50p.

Too true! My last Octy was a doddle to remove the headlamp unit. Why oh why didn't they repeat this design in the Yeti? Other members have posted on this before but, until it actually happens to you, you don't realise what a pain in the a**e it is!

Well, there's good news and a lot of bad news.

A very nice man turned up and collected the Yeti this morning and returned it later this afternoon.

"All fixed, everything OK now, new headlight unit fitted", and off he went. 20 minutes later I took the car for a test run. Yes, the indicators and fog light seem ok. But, the drivers window would not go down or up on auto (only on "bit by bit" on the button). I solved this by the "holding the button to reset" technique outlined on this forum previously. Then I noticed the parking senser button was flashing. Park Assist, and parking sensers were not working - nice error message displaying in the MFD "Park Assist defective - Workshop!".

I wonder if the guys at my dealer really know what they are doing! I'll call them back tomorrow to arrange a new date for a fix - or does anyone know of a Skoda dealer that realy knows what there're doing with Canbus electrics?

I will not mention dealer name at the moment (but tempted to). McD will know who!

Argh!!!!!! That is why touch wood I'm really happy to have never had a car in an accident and having had to repair it. If they can't even fix a car that is as straight as the day it rolled of the production line what hope is there after an accident?!

Hope you get to the bottom of this. Good luck.

Thanks, Johann. Sympathy appreciated! Still love the car, though!

Just to close up this tale....

All is well now! Ran down to the dealer a few days ago. It seems a sensor was not connected back (or not connected properly) and the computer boards don't like that much, throwing the entire parking sensor system into fault disablement. But, while I enjoyed a healthy breakfast at the nearby greasy spoon, everything was put back to working order, and I've got my gismos back to play with again.

BTW, anyone noticed how much you miss the rear park sensors once you've got used to using them?

Glad to hear all is well now. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Glad you got it sorted.

It is a shame that the job wasn't done perfectly the first time but at least they rectified their mistake quickly.

Thanks all. To be fair, the dealer did make good efforts to rectify the problems. The first time, they drove over to me to collect and then return the car (but pity they didn't check all was well first). Offer to do the same was repeated but, due to personal committments, I decided to hold on for a while before having it looked at again. But, when I was ready, they booked it in within a day of me ringing them back so (and it suited me to take it in myself), fair enough, can't make much fuss about their efforts!
