How to reduce fuel consumption

Featured Replies

On Saturday I found a puncture in a rear tyre so filled it up with the gunk and it is temporarily OK.

Being aware of all the terrible things that could happen if I failed to follow the instructions, I stuck to the recommended 50 MPH speed limit and got a fuel consumption of 51.6 MPG over a 10 mile journey.

Who says punctures are not environmentally friendly.

Tomorrow four new tyres!! Got 21600 miles out of the Goodyear original fit - so not too bad.

...

I had a similar experience, although with the skinny spare rather than gunk: had to drive from Manchester to London via M62 and A1 at 50mph all the way: 57.9mpg! Amazing economy, but the journey took forever

I also noticed this back in January when I had to have my spare fitted on the M25...because of the reduced speed emoticon-0136-giggle.gif So I now drive every where at 50mph......I think not.......

Around London....I'm lucky to average 10mphemoticon-0140-rofl.gif & 30mpg.

I have noticed much better fuel consumption driving slower.

On our recent trip to Wales we drove up taking our time (60 - 65) on the motorway and around 55 on the A roads.

Used cruise whenever possible and got just under 52 mpg.

Coming home we were a bit more eager and got the usual 42.5.

Usually I get about 450 miles from a brimmed tank but was surprised to see 590 on the trip before refilling.

Miles to empty showed 20 so I could have pushed it to over 600 miles but I chickened out!

I've found that if I switch cruise control on, I get worse MPG.

A nice long motorway drive normally shows it up if you switch on CC halfway dalong the journey, you can see the average MPG start to drop

I totally agree with this. I have pretty much (although unscientifically) proved that I can get better returns at a given speed than the CC can. I havent found many others that agree with that though tbh.

Maybe we're just very "light-footed", so to speak in a non-"good with colours" kind of a way :giggle:
