Main Beam issue

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've just purchased a 03 Superb 2.5 TDI with 110K on the clock. I've a problem with the drivers side main beam, I've replaced the bulb twice and still no result, there is no evidence of water ingress and the left main beam works fine? No other elec problems to report and the car has a full main dealer history. I presume it's unlikely to be a fuse as one headlight is working, could it be a relay or wire connection, installing the bulb is very fiddley could the previous owner have done damage to the wiring in there?

This is my third Skoda, Fabia then Octavia and now Superb. I'm coming up in the world! :)

P.s. I know there is a lot of people voicing disapproval of the old block 2.5 TDI but I've owned the 1.9TDI (100bhp), 1.9TDI (130Bhp) <Passat>, 2.0TDI (140Bhp) and I love it! A Cruiser...

Any help or advise will be appreciated.

The dipped and main beam headlamps are all fused separately L & R (4 fuses in all). Check here first.

In an astonishing piece of VAG bean counting, you will find that the chart on the fuse box cover bears no relation to what's actually there. That is because the idiots used the fuse card from a LHD B5.5 which is a mirror image of the fuse box on our RHD cars. Just what you need on a wet dark night when something stops working.

Scan the fuse card and use Microsoft Power Point or similar to laterally invert the image. Print, stick the two sides together and you have a fuse card which describes reality. As the details are largely symbols, inverting the image does not appreciably degrade readability.

Why have I given money to such a set of numpties? Toyota next time.

I've distilled it down to a short on the wiring (the car is blowing fuses even when the bulb isn't in.

I presume that replacing the wiring loom is a big job?

Also, has anyone else encoutered this problem, could it be something simple I've overlooked? The Relay seems to be working fine.
