1.2tsi and caravan / trailer

Featured Replies

Hi all, we have a 2011 / 1.2tsi manual, we are thinking of getting a lightweight caravan, has anyone used their 1.2tsi for towing a large trailer or caravan at all, if so i would be interested to learn from your experience...and comments.

Hi

I can't comment on the towing ability of the 1.2tsi as I tow with a remapped CR140. But I'm sure you can do it no problem, but others will confirm, as the 1.2 tsi has a gem of an engine.

But, further to recent discussions, you should be able to tow at the upper speed limits in France....emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Check what the plate says on the bottom of the drivers B post. That gives you all the LEGAL max weights.

thankyou for the replies, i know what the max permissable laden towable weight is and all the legalities etc, what i was wondering was more on how the engine performed with the caravan.

Sure it would be fine with something like a Lunar Ariva or an Xplore 304, in other words something light.

As a matter of interest, what are the limits?

As a 1.2 tsi owner I have to say... rather you than me. You need a rather light caravan.

The Yeti 1.2 is probably the lightest variant, with less weight over the front axle than any of the others. Pulling away uphill would need a sensitive driver to avoid traction issues. Particularly if you have to deploy the caravan in a field.

If I was towing more than occasionally I'd get a diesel variant.

I have the same engine but in a fabia estate. It doesn't lack of power towing something like 1200kg (trailer) And if you load the trailer/caravan correctly you will have no problem with the light weight front. But with and outside temp of +20celsius the engine will have a oiltemp of minimum +98 celsius (85km/h, aircon on) And my fabia drank just as much fuel as the 2010 chrysler 3.8L V6 with the same load. Ended up with 12L/100km, highway 200km city 15km.

So, it can tow and does it well, but fuel consumption suffers because of the small sized turbo charhed engine and it has to work really hard to get there.
