Greenline engine noise

Featured Replies

We have a greenline fabia we have owned it since new it is three years old we with full main dealer service history.

I recently took it for its service and first Mot and on the service sheet they say there is a noise from the engine that needs looked at they have no idea what it is and it sounds the same as it akways has to me i think they may be pulling a fast one as the car is only 2 weeks out of warranty it has only done 18,000 miles.

Does the greenline sound any different to the normal 1.4tdi im a litlle worried about it.

Well it's a three cylinder affair so she will be noisy, I've got the 1.4tdi 70bhp and it's a 2008 model, only 2 weeks out of warranty you may get some joy out of skoda uk they are pretty good at helping out so early out of warranty, let them have a look and take it from there ;)

+1 with Sebs advice! All engine noises should be investigated as early as possible and the fact it's out of warranty by two weeks is not necessarily a problem. If the dealer finds anything Skoda will almost certainly help with or cover the cost. Did the dealer mention what sort of noise they were referring to? If it was something very bad they would have advised you not to use it.

Oh...and welcome by the way. There's a lot of help on here.

They said it may be nothing or maybe something they are not sure just said sounded different to others they had got always sounded the same to me.

It was just on the advisory sheet they give you not in the urgent section.

Am going to try to pop into another dealer this week see if they will take a listen to it.

I have the same car as you, same engine etc. The only time I have had my car make an 'odd' noise is when idling in the middle of a regen cycle. The 'note' is different,is a little more lumpy also. Having the engine idling when in on service with it also coinciding with a regen isnt completely unlikely. After 34,000 miles in mine I know exactly when its doing a regen but some folks may not realise the same as the differences are subtle (no disrespect intended).

Mine has always just sounded like a rattly tractor otherwise... :)

Brilliant Raisbeck. I keep forgetting you Greenline guys have to keep regenerating! That's most prolly what it is.

Andy, the other thing that can make the engine sound a bit different is a slightly loose cambelt, especially when the engine is cold. This causes slight valve train backlash making the valve springs noisy. As the block warms up the belt tightens and the noise largely goes away. This is more noticeable on engines with hydraulic tappets (like the 1422cc & 1.9 PD engine) but will also have some effect on performance on a PD if the belt is anymore than just slightly loose.

This may sound silly, but just turn your air con onto full cool.

My vRS occasionally makes a sort of gear grinding noise.

So I turned the air con off and the noise stopped.

I turned it on again and the noise returned.

I turned the air con to full cool and the noise went.

Turned the air con back to 22 and the noise had gone.

I will mention this at the first service, but for the time being the noise has gone.

Regards

Tony :mmm:

I guarantee you thats the regen cycle. Mine does the same. You should also notice a very slight drop off in power and when going downhill the car sort of 'stutters'.

If you do motorway or extended runs it regens about every 100-120 miles. otherwise its around 100 miles.

The exhaust note is loudest I find at about 2000 rpm. Its all very normal and as you say over in a few minutes.
