What do to with old Turbo Unit?

Featured Replies

Hey All,

I too had the dreaded turbo issues on the 2.0 TDI which has now been replaced. Basically the normal symtoms of going into limb mode and reset if turning off ignition. The garage thought sticky vanes and the bearings were not great so recommended a replacement unit.

I've gotton to keep the old turbo unit and have wondered if it has any value?

I rang one turbo supplier and offered them the unit and they said it was worth between £20-£40 to them. To be honest this kind of annoyed me as they will easily charge £500+ for it after re-con and they will get another unit back in exchange once sold.

Thoughts so far, I could get it re-conditioned and then sell on, ebay it as is or maybe try a few more suppliers.

Any thoughts?

Might be that by the time one adds new seals, gaskets, bearings, bolts, nuts etc etc needed to offer it as a reconditioned unit that there is less value than one would think in the rotors and stator i.e. the fundamental bits of metal involved.

TBH when they recon one, then will just be using the housing and replacing most of the other parts.

I think £20-40 is reasonable, bearing in mind they have to refurb it, cover all their costs and turn a profit on the thing.

Keep it. If you ever need to replace your turbo again (hopefully not) you can send on that one as the exchange unit and speed up your turnaround.

Either keep hold of it, as mentioned - or stick it on eBay.
