It's a bug's life...

Featured Replies

I've always loved macro and used to do a bit back in the day with my point and shoot. I got the 105 VR a couple of years ago and never really got round to trying it out, so I made it my missions to give it a go. here are a few critters I found, I'm still not 100% happy with my macro yet, but I'm hoping more practise will get me there....

Wicked stuff.

Those are pretty good actually.

You probably already know this, but the big issue with macro modes is that your depth of field is only about 2 inches before you get visibly out of focus, so absolute stability of range to subject is critical.

Yep, hence why these were around F22 with an SB600 flash - you'd have known about it if these were shot in anything other than manual lol

Those are fantastic shots - especially like the bluebottle. How did you use your flash to get close-up coverage and avoid lens shadow? Was it off-camera? I have tried using a diffuser on a hotshoe mounted flash and that helped but not as good as your results.

Aww, love the mantis, he's very cute. I find it difficult to find interesting bugs. I tend to just find loads of spiders and black flies :( ew.

I have some snail ones too somewhere, they look a bit peculiar close up because they don't have a face! lol

You could photoshop a little face on them maybe?! :)
